I recently began having screamers flare up again. I looked at my subscribed items and sorted by items updated, and while the EAS alarm and Xenomorph playermodel were both updated today, I'm pretty sure the EAS alarm one is legit, and the comments under Xenomorph seemed to be still positive.

However, the trollface playermodel was the most recent update for me, and when I unsubscribed this showed up in the console.

Like it wouldn't be out of pocket for a trollface addon to be named that, but just the fact that it's called "Oddkast Virus" susses me out. Iunno, can anyone who's more technologically inclined look into it?

Well, the first one legitimately got hacked, according to a screenshot I saw on the megathread where he apologized on discord and said he was trying to get his account back via Steam Support.
The second one is a sad copycat who felt the need to ruin his own great mods with this nonsense, and I can only hope that this doesn't become a pattern in the way that most terrible things do.
At least we have the tried and true method of going into subscribed content and sorting content by Date Updated. Seriously glad they have that option.

No, you should be absolutely fine! The screamer was just a script, meaning that it essentially bound the W key to playing the screaming sound and displaying the image. I know that it might seem like they can touch the rest of your files, given the offline feel of the singleplayer experience, but you're absolutely fine. The only reason it seems subversive is because they hit you where you didn't expect it - singleplayer. But all they did was add scripts to their addons that you downloaded without knowing, or even updating the addons so that you wouldn't notice anything out of the ordinary.

You don't need to unsub from addons, but do be cognizant of the implications. If you see an addon update, there's a potential for something unexpected to happen, so see if they wrote anything in their changelog or responded to comments. This'll give you a better sense of what addons can be trusted.
