So, if the choice stands between Portal 2 and GMod... Screw this, I would pick Portal 2.
And Im saying this with over 400 hours in GMod spent. Portal 2 wont give the same 400+ hours, but it will tell a good story and even let you play alot of custom maps.
GMod is boring. Especially that if you dont have friends and wont download any addons (mods). These 400 hourse came from playing custom maps with friends and using some mods to make it better. Also from writing own mods.
Worse part is that in order to get half the f*cking maps to work, you will also need to buy and install 1-3 extra games from Valve. Same goes to a good share of addons, but, thankfully, best ones are usually self-sustainable.
Gmod for me isn't boring and I've gotten like 2000 hours on it. But I've taken a break from gmod before and played other games. You also usually don't need Portal 2 installed for anything to work and you can just get the 1-3 extra games's content from other websites.
