Some maps have horror elements, others are horror entities. The game in itself isn't scary.

I know the game isn't haunted, but the loneliness, the atmosphere, everything about it when you're alone is unsettling. I always want to uninstall the game, but my friend doesn't want me to. After the map gm_construct13, I've been unsettled from when I tried it.

Depends on the maps and addons you play with but there is a persistent feeling of loneliness if you play on single player due to most maps being liminal spaces.

It's a sandbox game based on Half-Life 2, it use its assets alongside other Source Engine games assets. Nothing scary itself.
The scary elements come from the user generated content trough the Workshop, like maps. But they usually are pretty lame and mainly rely on screamers / jumpscares, just don't download those and you're fine.
