Garry's Mod
My stance on the current state of Garry's Mod
I wasn't sure what to title this as, but before you click off, I'm not here to preach doom and gloom. I'm here to give my thought in hopes that some people here may understand. I'm not here to complain about how gaming isn't what it used to be (Even though, it isn't) and that all games past a particular year are inferior. Now, i'm aware most people are already avoiding this post due to the preachy title, and i'm aware I might sound like I think people care about what I think, and you don't have to, but at the very least, listen.

I first got into Garry's mod actually around when it exploded in popularity, 2012 I think. I couldn't actually even play it but I loved it. I first played it on a HP laptop. Which ran it pretty well. I played for hours, messing with mods, exploring maps. I can't remember when I played my first actual gamemode, but I remember it being zombie survival, which I played intensively. But the game mode I really got into, was Half-life 2 RP. As a huge fan of Half-life, I was hooked. It was on HL2RP where I broke 1,000 hours on Garry's mod. It wasn't until now that I wanted to start creating my own things for GMod, but now, it's almost as if it's too late.

We can all deny it, but you start to realize, GMod's lifespan as come to an end, in fact, a majority of what I and many other have held so highly has. Half-life seems to have had the final nail, intrest in it has dropped, Gmod's community has shedded from it, leaving it a half-feathered carcass, Youtube now consist of only what youtube and the masses believes to deserve attention, Youtube runs on drama, and it seems what's left of GMod remains is largely drama. Game developers follow trends, pump the games out as fast as they can, keeping the game functional just enough to scrape some money with it to make a sequel to repeat. Most games focus on fast paced, uber-competitive multiplayer, and while I may be above average at such things, I don't have what it takes to get maximum enjoyment out of them. I miss the old days of steam, even though I started gaming on a console, I lived through those days, and I deeply wish I got to expirence them with more intimacy. and i've come here hoping others feel this deeply, care this deeply. The way I do.

I've always wanted to be a part of something big, something revolutionary. It's why I held valve in such high esteem. I've had dreams of creating Half-life mods, I've had dreams of making peaceful, eerie maps. The kind you can walk around on, and soak it in. And now i've got this feeling, this feeling that I just can't seem to shake, always with me, like a foot print in snow. The feeling that something like it, this era of our community, our culture wont be the same. I wish that I didn't have to be here, typing this out, but i've been thinking about it for so long, I felt it was nessecary for me. Like I wouldn't ever get past it, as if i'd never proceed past this point. 1,290 hours I've spent on this game, and I woundn't have spent it anywhere else. Rest in peace, Gmod.

I dont think Gmod has died yet, as it still has many players playing the game, and many workshop addons being created, and a huge one, called "Jazztronauts", about to release in a few days. I got into Gmod at around the same time as you did, because of 2 small youtubers that have both sadly been gone for a long time now.
I remember when many big people actually made videos about this game, and I miss it, but only because the game isnt being talked about much on the internet, it doesnt have to be dead.
Atleast thats how I see it.

Well, concerned citizen. I thank you for your contribution to the garrys mod community but I will have to argue your point is incorrect. Garry's Mod isnt dead, people always decide that its dying because they've played for 2 years and are now bored of it, they assume everyone is bored of it.

On steamcharts you can see monthly players on garrysmod aswell as current numbers. https://steamcharts.com/app/4000

Garry's Mod is far from dead, your just bored of it. A couple of months ago a fabulous mapper by the name of King Pommes released a new venator map that crushed the limits of the source engine and suprised the entire community. Within 12 hours 1 person revolutionized an entire sector of the game.

On a day to day basis developers, mappers and modelers are getting more and more talented. I will agree with your statement that gaming isnt what it used to be, its better now then ever. Since 2012 Garry's Mod has improved an astronomical amount, and thats thanks to the improvement of the community provided mods. You say you want to be apart of something great, we'll be apart of something great. 3 years ago a friend contacted me saying he wanted to start a SWRP server. I gladly joined him knowing nothing about the gamemode or even how to run a garrys mod server but that didnt stop me. 3 years later Im now a talented developer providing custom content for tons of people weekly aswell as making money while doing it. Now at 15 years old I've ran multiple successful communities and run my own development team.

Garry's Mod is far from dead, be apart of the next thing that revolutionizes the next gamemode!

I don't see it as fully dead, I just see that its at the end of its life span. The creativity is nowhere near what it used to be, as mos big modders quit. Who were the youtubers you're speaking of?

I'm not bored of it, I just dont see as many mods that appeal to me being released. It seemed like everyone I talked to felt the same way. I dont think its dead, I think it's reaching the end of its lifespan, along with other aspect of gaming culture. I value your reply though.

It is unlikely that anyone ever heard of them, mostly because they almost exclusively did Gmod, had less than 100k subs and were german.

Their names were "Grantelbart" (Channel deleted)
And "Todoo", who you can still find on youtube. (inactive)
They both made 2 seasons of Gmod with over 300 videos in total, just messing around with anything Gmod had to offer.
They started in 2012, and ended with part 337 in 2015.

I beg to differ, this map alone shows the growth in the community and improvement in technology by mappers, modelers, lua developers. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1257128301&searchtext=Venator

That map alone has 3 times the subs as entire garrys mod has players.
The game isn't nearing the end of its lifespan, that'll easily be 5 or more years from now. There's still nothing like GMod out there, I've been playing GMod since 2008-2009 and I've heard more than once people claiming the game is going to die soon.

The community is absolutely nothing like it used to be, a lot of it was well made build-oriented servers, and the build community was extremely big, really was a 'smarter' playerbase back then, if you will. DarkRP was about roleplay & building with a occasional raids and no custom player models or jobs for donors. Infact, there weren't even custom playermodels on those servers. Now DarkRP is customer based, addon filled, "Roleplay-ish" with raids and occasional building.

Point being, people went from building and occasional shooting, to who can rack up the most money and every server is a near identical copy from eachother. Back when I would play a lot, the gamemodes everybody loved were Sandbox, TTT, and my favorite, Spacebuild.
Spacebuild is essentially Sandbox in space, you build your own space ship (this gamemode had life support, energy modules, solar panels etc, fusion generators, heat & oxygen distributers for ships, and whatnot), you could make legitimate space stations and have players mount. You could explore, take over planets, mine asteroids for resources, and so much more.
I bet most have never heard of that gamemode, it's all RP now with some sandbox.

What I'm saying is, market changes, it was building, now it's RP, and later it'll probably be something else like Battle Royal, Survival, back to building, or something else. Don't worry too much, GMod is here to stay for a longer time. I'm excited for S&Box, it'll hopefully be the refresh that many of the GMod community, old and new, have been wishing for.

I never really got to play spacebuild myself, but I still love messing around on spacebuild maps, building stuff or just using addons to explore the different planets. The only problem is finding new maps to explore, as I start to feel like I have found every single spacebuild map the workshop has to offer by now.
I do wish I would have gotten to play real spacebuild with someone tho.

It was great, having servers with 13~ people on it was the best experience because it wasn't too cluttered but definitely wasn't empty. It was nice to see everybody's unique creations, I loved making small transport ships to transport large storage caches full of resource I'd make at my generator farms.

I'd make efficient factories and pump out resources for large space stations, have myself and other workers transport all these resources to big stations that the server would board and everybody would meet up on. It was great.

In the next few days, there will be a gamemode coming out called "Jazztronauts", which will also bring the source engine to its limits, aswell as being the most madness Gmod has seen in a long time.
If you havent heard of it, you basically select a random map from the workshop, load into the map, and then try to steal any kind of trash you can find. From props, NPCs, brushes and hell, even the level triggers, you can steal anything you want and literally take apart the entire map.

I hope this gamemode will explode in popularity once it comes out, as it sounds extremely fun, and I cant wait to play it.

Thank you for your answers, this was some of the most mature talk of GMod i've seen in a long time, and you've restored some of my faith.
while i sure aint a vet like most peeps around here, aslong as the core reason for why this game exists "the sandbox, buildy part" and you can host servers with friends and stuff, being able to make mods and all that jazz, this game will live on for a long long ass time.

there isnt another game like it out there that gives you this much freedom like GMod, and sure, the community can go to ♥♥♥♥ some times (if not most of the time sadly) you can seriously ignore it like you had a vaccine to it.

dont lose faith friendo
i do admit one thing though, it is kinda sad that RP servers and people who make posters are like the norm gamemodes/things to do for GMod probably because its a bit alienating to players to build something with wire tool etc.
