I dont think Gmod has died yet, as it still has many players playing the game, and many workshop addons being created, and a huge one, called "Jazztronauts", about to release in a few days. I got into Gmod at around the same time as you did, because of 2 small youtubers that have both sadly been gone for a long time now.
I remember when many big people actually made videos about this game, and I miss it, but only because the game isnt being talked about much on the internet, it doesnt have to be dead.
Atleast thats how I see it.
On steamcharts you can see monthly players on garrysmod aswell as current numbers. https://steamcharts.com/app/4000
Garry's Mod is far from dead, your just bored of it. A couple of months ago a fabulous mapper by the name of King Pommes released a new venator map that crushed the limits of the source engine and suprised the entire community. Within 12 hours 1 person revolutionized an entire sector of the game.
On a day to day basis developers, mappers and modelers are getting more and more talented. I will agree with your statement that gaming isnt what it used to be, its better now then ever. Since 2012 Garry's Mod has improved an astronomical amount, and thats thanks to the improvement of the community provided mods. You say you want to be apart of something great, we'll be apart of something great. 3 years ago a friend contacted me saying he wanted to start a SWRP server. I gladly joined him knowing nothing about the gamemode or even how to run a garrys mod server but that didnt stop me. 3 years later Im now a talented developer providing custom content for tons of people weekly aswell as making money while doing it. Now at 15 years old I've ran multiple successful communities and run my own development team.
Garry's Mod is far from dead, be apart of the next thing that revolutionizes the next gamemode!
Their names were "Grantelbart" (Channel deleted)
And "Todoo", who you can still find on youtube. (inactive)
They both made 2 seasons of Gmod with over 300 videos in total, just messing around with anything Gmod had to offer.
They started in 2012, and ended with part 337 in 2015.
That map alone has 3 times the subs as entire garrys mod has players.
The community is absolutely nothing like it used to be, a lot of it was well made build-oriented servers, and the build community was extremely big, really was a 'smarter' playerbase back then, if you will. DarkRP was about roleplay & building with a occasional raids and no custom player models or jobs for donors. Infact, there weren't even custom playermodels on those servers. Now DarkRP is customer based, addon filled, "Roleplay-ish" with raids and occasional building.
Point being, people went from building and occasional shooting, to who can rack up the most money and every server is a near identical copy from eachother. Back when I would play a lot, the gamemodes everybody loved were Sandbox, TTT, and my favorite, Spacebuild.
Spacebuild is essentially Sandbox in space, you build your own space ship (this gamemode had life support, energy modules, solar panels etc, fusion generators, heat & oxygen distributers for ships, and whatnot), you could make legitimate space stations and have players mount. You could explore, take over planets, mine asteroids for resources, and so much more.
I bet most have never heard of that gamemode, it's all RP now with some sandbox.
What I'm saying is, market changes, it was building, now it's RP, and later it'll probably be something else like Battle Royal, Survival, back to building, or something else. Don't worry too much, GMod is here to stay for a longer time. I'm excited for S&Box, it'll hopefully be the refresh that many of the GMod community, old and new, have been wishing for.
I do wish I would have gotten to play real spacebuild with someone tho.
I'd make efficient factories and pump out resources for large space stations, have myself and other workers transport all these resources to big stations that the server would board and everybody would meet up on. It was great.
If you havent heard of it, you basically select a random map from the workshop, load into the map, and then try to steal any kind of trash you can find. From props, NPCs, brushes and hell, even the level triggers, you can steal anything you want and literally take apart the entire map.
I hope this gamemode will explode in popularity once it comes out, as it sounds extremely fun, and I cant wait to play it.

Thank you for your answers, this was some of the most mature talk of GMod i've seen in a long time, and you've restored some of my faith.
there isnt another game like it out there that gives you this much freedom like GMod, and sure, the community can go to ♥♥♥♥ some times (if not most of the time sadly) you can seriously ignore it like you had a vaccine to it.
dont lose faith friendo
