HL2.exe not working?

I have almost no clue about computer games as I have just started to play them and a friend of mine told me to get Garry's mod so I got It and when I click play I get a blue screen and then it pops up saying HL2.exe isn't working or something?I don't know what to do and I would love to play the game. Help me?

What operating system are you using? If it's Windows 7 or Vista, follow the instructions below.

Right click "Computer"
Click "Manage"
Under the "System Tools" section, Double click "Local Users and Groups"
Click "Groups"
Right click "Administrators"
Click "Add to group..."
Click "Add"
Click "Advanced"
Click "Find Now"
Double click "Local Service"
Click "Ok"
"NT Authority\Local Service" should show up in the list now
Click "Ok"
Close Computer Management and reboot.

If that does not work, boot your computer up in safe mode with command promt. In the command prompt, type in one of these three variations of this command. (first one worked for me)


Net localgroup Administrators local service /add



net localhost Administrators /add Local Service



net localgroup Administrators /add Local Service



If that does not work, replace all "localgroup" with "localhost"

The part where you say double click 'Local Users and Groups' I can't find that? Im useing a windows vista basic

Do you have any source games?
Half-Life 2
Team Fortress 2
Counter-Strike Source
ETC?

You need one of those games installed, and launched at least once, to play Garrysmod.

EDIT: Looks like you have CSS...
I would highly recommend getting Half-Life 2 to get most of the game content however. The game goes on sale a lot.

I just bought HL2 and it doesn't seem to work for me either.. I'm not sure perhaps it could be something with my computer?

Before the game starts quickly press alt+tab and click on steam and click on play garrysmod and then it should work it work for me and others one time when that happen to everybody one update

I fully downloaded both gmod and HL2 and I launched HL2 but I didnt get anything,

Windows Vista is not a good gaming type thingy-majig. mabye update to windows 7 then try.

It's also horrible with networking. It usually just ignores any outgoing traffic. I dare you to run a server with Vista.

No, this isn't just to play Gmod.
Windows 7 is known to use less memory than Vista, and works with more programs/games.
And again, any program that uses the network is going to not fail and crash.

Yeah I recommend Windows 7.

Get Home Premium at least, not the beginner/starter version.

The only problem I have with this though is my Old gaming computer had Vista on it and I could run any game on steam fine, including Garrysmod. Vista kind of just plain sucks otherwise however.
