is it normal for gmod to take 30 minutes to join a server
My name is Ayrton Senna, and I am pissed!

This was going on for about a month now, and I posted over 50 threads of the same thing constantly, yet nobody would stop and wait a minute to help my problem, and if they did look at it, the following messages would not be helpful, they're just trying to ♥♥♥♥ with me on purpose.

This happened around the 2nd week of December. I chose to play Garrys Mod after about a week or so. I always go on the QIG sandbox server because in my opinion, it's a really fun server, you should check it out, i'll post in an IP address if you want.

The server has a lot of addons, and I mean A LOT. It has ALL of the TDM, SGM, LW, and Sped Car addons plus PT and Souce drive vehicles, with M9K weapons, playable pianos, and some building tools. It's the ultimate sandbox server.

I click "Join Server" as it suggests, and the game freezes. That means it's working. It shows the usual loading screen with the words "recieving server info" or some ♥♥♥♥. About a minute after that, it downloads Workshop items that I do not have installed yet for some strange reason, and that took 4 minutes. 4 minutes to download unwanted crap! But HOLD ON; IT GETS EVEN BETTER.

I chose to play on my ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Kindle playing ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Asphalt 8 until it gets so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ boring that I chose to never play that piece of ♥♥♥♥ again! 8 minutes in to loading the server, the map and the MOTD finally loads up. I jump out of my bed and apply my ass directly on to the seat, laying my right palm onto the mouse and my left palm onto my keyboard waiting anxiously to play. I hear that strange looping sound and I get ecstatic, but that was short-lived because the map stops loading and goes back to the loading screen with the pop-up that says "Disconnect: Ayrton Senna timed out". My happy face soon turned into a sad face like a smacked bottom.

As it takes me back to the main screen, I chose to be an optimist about this situation. "Eh, it's okay. Maybe the server crashed or something. Hopefully, the programmers may fix this later on," I remarked. I apply pressure to the left mouse button as the cursor was on the "Join Server" button. This time, it was shorter because... well, everything I downloaded was automatically cached to a temporary folder in the GMod folder. 5 minutes later, the map loads up, the motd loads up, I hear that looping noise again, and I got really excited that I got in my seat again ready to play. This time, I didn't time out, not one bit; but it says that I have "connection problems, automatic disconnect in this many seconds", ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.

I repeat joining the server a numerous ammount of times until after a total of 30 minutes, I finally connect to the server PROPERLY and... *inhale* a minute later, I was told that I had school in the morning. I laughed maniacally and also screaming, too.

The next day, after school, I decided to change the graphics quality on Garrys Mod to a lower definition for the sake of speed, and also uninstalled some useless Workshop addons that I don't need to join the server I failed to join an episode of times, only to realize that this did not change ANYTHING.

*clap clap*

I need answers. Why is this happening to me. Why does it take so damn long to join the one server I always used to join without any problems? Give me a legitimate answer.

Okay.
Oh well, looks like this Christmas tale had a happy ending after all!

* cast laughs as the view zooms out to a small town with a light blizzard; credits roll *

This may mean you have too much addons, that generally slows down garry's mod. Try un-subscribing and uninstalling some mods.

The problem is already fixed, I think.
Addons have to mount/load themselves every time you load a map. Whenever you load a map - rather it be singleplayer or multiplayer - your own addons are ALL loaded (Rather or not they will actually be in use; disabled or not, even if the server lacks the addons) - a low amount of addons will result in a faster loading speed. A larger amount will take longer.

Unsubscribe from anything you do not need, and optionally head to garrysmod/addons and remove the addon (.gma) file(s) from that folder.

Sometimes, it's the server that's lagging; try other servers with FastDL and less addons. Also, try to join servers with lowest ping as possible.

Also just a question, how many programs are running in your taskbar or how many processes are in your task manager? If the amount is low, then it's ok.

Hope I helped!

Yes, that's what I did but that didn't change anything.
