Am I missing something or this game is really bad?
Hello all. This is NOT a hate post so please be considerate. I am a grown man who fell back in love with modern video games and I have a good computer.

I never heard of GMod before buying it but from what I could read, this game let's you do anything, sandbox style. Fine.
I was looking for a game where I could, maybe, build stuff and organise everything to my tastes. Maybe a bit like I used to do with the Sims 12 years ago but in first person view.
It turns out this game is not that, am I wrong?

So I start the game fine, controller doesn't work with it, ok. I run around a bit a small map, spawn a chair and a lifeless caracter. Yay. Get bored after 10 minutes from the lack of options.
I start a multiplayer game, takes 5 minutes to load, nothing to do, no one around. A few object laying around. I find a car and run into an invisible wall. I start to get the idea this game is the worst, yet it is praised all around the internet. Let's try something else.
I start another multiplayer game, takes 5-10 minutes to load, I find myself in a Counter Strike kind of game but with no rules but half the game is missing textures and I get kicked out after 2 minutes. Wow.
I try to start another game on another server, takes 5-10 minutes to load, game doesn't start and I'm back to the start screen. Damn.
I go back to the single player game. Spawn a barrel. Spawn another one on top. Go through the inventory objects, only a few...

No really, is that it??? Where is the fun? I know I am missing something but I just don't get it.

Please explain what's up with this game!

Thanks.

The problem with this is you think it is a game, it's actually a mod.

So if it's a mod, it's a mod to what game?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mod_%28video_gaming%29

And why is it sold as a standalone game?

what he meant is garry's mod alone is by far not complete
you can have fun with it, but it's rather restricted in its functionalities
you can mount other source games to use their content or search in the workshop/the internet for addons, which enhance your experience with more gamemodes, weapons, models, etc

If you don't have CSS, thats why you had missing textures, but on gameplay, you should find a gamemode you actually like, popular ones being: GMod tower (minigames), Zombie survival (take a guess), TTT (find someone else to explain it or play it yourself its kind of hard to describe), Prop hunt (hide as a prop and seek as a guy with a gun) and Roleplay go and play some too see what you like

Ok thanks for the suggestions, I will look for those.

It is best to have atleast "Counter Strike: Source" and either "Half Life 2" or both "Half life 2 Episode 1" and "Half Life 2 Episode 2". Either way, you will need valve games to make use of most of the best addons. Also, gamemodes I recommend are "Prop Hunt" and "Trouble in Terrorist Town" and maybe "Melon Bomber".

Just get the whole "Orange Box" for G-Mod anyway. The games it contains are 100% worth the price you pay.

It´s a game where you can choose what to do, and what not to do, the Start and the End is your mind. If you dont have idea of start and end, or you dont have imagination, or you dont know how to appreciate this game, then this game is not for you.

Coming from a person who has logged a little over 3000 hrs on this game. Believe me, there is always something to do on this. Sometimes, this is a mindless game you can beat the crap out of other players with bricks. But other times, it can be a game where your trying to figure out the timing for your v6 engine. In my opinion, this is a mod. by the very definition it is a mod. but, the game part, that comes in when you let it :) this mod has thousands of games in it. Haha come to think of it, its like being told to go outside and have fun. If the great sights and fresh air bores the crap out of you, and throwing rocks into your neighbors windows just sounds like work, then you better go somewhere else. This game was 10 bucks and I find myself playing this more than my $60 arma3 game haha.

Workshop is your best friend for this game. Loads of addons to toy with. Give a topic a search on the workshop page, and I'm sure you'll find more then a few things.
...trust me, I got 5,000 something hours and I'm STILL not bored of it!
