If you sell Admin rank on your server, you're a scammer and here's why.
Okay, so this is something that NEEDS to stop.
Servers that allow people to become admin by not sending an application,
but by BUYING that rank. This needs to stop because this is only fishing for more
donations and the chance for people to take advantage of it.

To be fair, you can have a good server and sell the ranks, but you need to do these things
if you allow that option:

1. Check the background history of the "admin-to-be".
2. Make sure they're doing their job, and doing it right.

There was an admin on a server I played that had 2 VAC bans, and he's now playing on a DarkRP server only a day after his ban was expired.

If you sell authority, you are not having any authority at all on your server.
You are also fooling people into thinking you HAVE staff, but they are not staff.
They are minges that so happen to have enough money to say "Hey, I'm in control now
♥♥♥♥♥.".

Thus, you're scamming people when they join the server in making them believe that they
are on a server with dedicated, smart, and logical staff.

Also, to any players out there, how do you REALLY know that the donation you sent to
them via paypal is really being used for the server and not being put into their pocket?

If you have an argument to go against this, please state it. I will happily give a rebuttal.

I completely agree, and I'm sure everyone else agrees, that Buy-it-yourself Admins are the worst of the lot, and it's completely just a cash grab, anyone with the selling of admin policy doesn't really care about their server.

Well too bad it isnt going to stop, right?

And it aint scamming. Noone guarantee's that you're going to be working with a logical, dedicated and smart staff.

If you run servers, you can make your decision however you wish. Why would you assume that an application is necessary? Personally I have never taken donations at all, and I find it somewhat distasteful of people to accept donations to be admin...but let me point out another way that you should look at it:

The owner(s) of game servers either own the hardware that the server runs on, or they rent it through a hosting company. Either way, this means they invest money to have the ability to operate the servers.

They also take the time and effort to make sure they run properly and stay up-to-date. This is something that isn't terribly difficult, but some people know very little, and maybe they get some time to learn these things if they ask enough questions and try to figure things out.

So, there are people that may want to have similar opportunities, but not have the money or knowledge to completely run the server themself.

By allowing someone to pay to be admin, maybe they learn something and enjoy some increased flexibility in being able to play on a server with admin privealges. Maybe they figure it out on their own that they could handle running a server on their own and go in that direction.

It is justifiable, because by paying, they are simply paying a fraction of what the owners pay, and have a fraction of the control that the owners have.

Whatever, so just like I said, I've never taken a donation for admin and don't really like it, but it is justifiable.

True... But how i see it as scamming is that we have people providing a service to a community in a video game that LOTS of people play. There's an expectation, especially when we have people who claim to have "Mature/Experienced Staff".

It's alot like when the Atari 2600 came out and the consumers were alienated on whether or not the games were good.

nice to have this discussion in this Gmod thing but actually what about the people who never go to the community discussions how u gonna tell them

The system is too easy to abuse. A minge could easily by admin and do things described in horror stories like those described by OP. Admin rights should only go to trustworthy people, and not to minges/squeakers...

Servers cost money. Living costs money. Nice things cost money.
Server owners nerd money. What better way to attract donations than to appeal to people's lust for power? It's a game of marketing, really.
I currently don't practice this, as I've learned it's a terrible idea. However, I'm lucky to get barely enough money to keep one server online, let alone buy nice things for the community, etc. The rich want power, and the best way to get money from them is to give them what they want.

Pretty sure Server owners dont nerd money.

Also, most of the addons on scriptfodder can eaisly be rewritten, as i done with my server. You really shouldnt buy addons.

But yes 0x42 is correct. Servers cost money and can be hard to mantain.

My way of it is, if your selling admin, quiz them, and make sure they are the right age. Or have managers watching over them.

And who are you to determine that?
I just stated I'm a server owner myself.
Servers cost money unless you host them from home. Not all server owners can provide that themselves.
Plus, some of us make server owning our full time job, at least through parts of school.
Ok. I was sarcasictly saying that you mispelled need with nerd.

.... Living costs money. Nice things cost money.
Server owners nerd money. ......
