I will not help you, I have not played gmod in years. I keep this up because I know it will help people out. Plus I figure it has to be easy to find on search engines since people keep finding it. Just stop posting, please keep this read-only.

Hint: Read everything.


- Everyone should do this first fix below, even if your Gmod works.

-----Gmod Crashes on start-up, or other problems you can't fix-----

- You have to re-verify your game cache, first step close gmod.

- Anti-Viruses will mess up your game cache, so have them running while you do this next step!

- Now open the Steam client>Library>Right click Garry's Mod>Properties>Local Files>"Verify Integrity of Game Cache"


-----Gmod crashes when you press the console key-----

- This may also fix random crashes, this can't hurt anything so try it.

- Ok so first close Gmod, then open the Steam client>Library>Right click Garry's Mod>Properties>"Set Launch Options" and type this in +mat_dxlevel 95

- Now you need to make a new Gmod icon on your desktop, delete the old one and go back to Steam>Library>Right click Garry's Mod>Create Desktop Shortcut


-----Gmod crashes when I join the server-----

- This should fix it, unless your past the downloads, but you need to download the workshop collection and all FastDL files for the server you are going to play on. I suggest downloading as much as you can, let it crash, then do this.

- In-Game go to Option>Multiplayer>"When a game server tries to download custom content to your computer" change that to "Do not download any custom files".


-----The wire text-screens in game don't work-----

- Type this is console wire_rt_fix


-----The scoreboard(tab) isn't working and showing an older version-----

- Type this is console FAdmin_IsScoreboard 1


-----Suggestions and common PC problems-----

- Get more RAM you should have a minimum of 8 GB, but should get 16 GB. This will make sure your RAM never fills.

- Delete useless junk on your HDD(Hard Drive Disk) and run a defragment and a disk cleanup. HDDs that are almost full run very slow, try to keep as much empty space as possible.

- Unsubscribe to all addons and delete the entire Gmod folder, then reinstall Gmod (go to C:/Program Files/Steam/SteamApps/Common and just delete the entire gmod folder.). Having to many addons causes tons of problems, you must unsubscribe to all addons and also delete there files, so might as well delete all of Gmod and reinstall. Side note, your settings may have been messed with so deleting the folder will solve this.


-----Other Stuff/Fixes-----

- I have also heard turning all graphic options up high fixes random crashes. I heard it from 1 person who suffered from random crashes, I have not tested it myself and idk anyone else who has tried it.

- Also, make sure your Gmod resolution is the same as your desktop.



***The most common problem is to many addons or settings have been messed with by other servers. The easiest way to fix this is go to the Gmod Workshop and unsubscribe to all workshop addons. Then delete the entire gmod folder, not just uninstall (go to C:/Program Files/Steam/SteamApps/Common and just delete the entire gmod folder.). Then re-install and try to stick with servers that do not have a crazy amount of addons, or just stick with 1 server. Every server is different, the more default it is the less problems you will have with other servers.(Unless the owner is great at programming Gmod servers, might even be able to reset your settings when you join.)

I try to join most RP servers and i crashed near the end plz help!

Im having a big issue with garry'smod.
Constantly when i join a server i will be in for approx 10 seconds then boom it will crash, the only error i get is this ShaderAPIDX8::CreateD3DTexture: D3DERR_INVALIDCALL.
I hope someone can help me since i miss playing garry'smod already.

Hey I would love it if someone can help me. I bought the Steam Machine i3 for my kids a few weeks ago. One of my sons is having problems with Gary's Mod. He says it's crashing when he's joining RP servers. How can I fix this for him? I tried the suggestion above. (Options-Multiplayer "do not download any custom files) That worked.. Sort of but the player models or a lot of other things were showing "ERROR".

I'm not very familiar with Linux and I know nothing about Steam but I do know Windows. Will the other suggestions possibly work? Can I even try them on a Steam Machine? I didn't want to bother trying them till I had a better understanding.

You're seeing the "ERROR" signs because you do not have the player models. The "fix" you are trying disables the download for these addons the Gmod server has. So you do not have the player models/textures. You will need to download them manually through the steam workshop or download them and let Gmod crash then change the multiplayer options. The steam machine is basically a cheap version of a gaming PC, just like xbox and playstation**. So, that's the main problem with trying to play gmod. But, a way around this is first being able to get on servers, which your kids can. Tell them to find a server they like and stick with it. Once they find a server allow the download of custom files and let gmod crash (or download them manually) then change the setting and you should be able to play.

Main issue is to many Gmod addons, jumping around from server to server just fills up your HDD (Filling of the HDD is not the only problem, it's loading all that stuff) and certain servers will mess with your settings. So, just find the server you want to play on,(write down the name(s) or IP address) and then delete Gmod completely (not an uninstall but complete file delete). Then only play on that server.

Gmod is a completely open source game and has TONS of addons made by random people. 30+ different addons made by 20+ different people doesn't always end up well for a server but will still work for most people. (I used to own a Gmod server I programmed myself, 50+ different addons by 40+ different people, I spent months fixing problems, but still in the end 1 out of 10 people still couldn't join.) This is a programmers game, not your average game, very different and FILLED WITH PROBLEMS!

**I do not know anything about the steam machine, other than it's competitive with xbox and playstation, but with various hardware providers.(Which confuses me more on why they don't have a windows phone app yet.)

I tried everything. The game let's me in, I get to the title screen, and immediately the game crashes. I have 16gb ram and a good enough computer to run it. I have played it before but it just stopped working. Help?

I was searching the internet about a major issue i've been having with my server crashing players games, when I found this forum. You seem very knowledgeable on the topic of gmod crashes so I was hoping you'd be able to help me. The server stays up but the majority of the players get sent back to desktop with the error: Too many indices for index buffer tell a programmer (with different numbers listed at the end each time). This is slowly killing my server so i'd be extremely grateful if anyone could help me understand why this is happening or what might be causing it.

When i join specific servers, All my text turns into black boxes that look like the ones on barcodes. Most servers are normal with the text problem. But if i join a new server this problem mostly is all i get it sometimes crashes my gmod. Or makes it unplayible with lag. Any solutions?
