Why wont my mic work on gmod?
I've checked all settings in the sound part of windows, its working fine, I can hear myself in the test, I've done the same when i'm in the gmod options, I can hear myself in the test and it all looks fine. It's definitely on and i'm holding the talk key aswell but my voice isnt going through in the game. I thought it was the mic so I bought a new one, it came today and this one doesnt work either...

How can I fix this?

I'm having the same problem, I've pretty much tried everything from forums. I dont know what is causing this, hopefully someone has an answer soon. I'm thinking that it is the new launcher for Gmod, that is causing this, pretty much a bug.
You can try a few things.

Enable voice in this game. through the Garry's Mod settings
Test microphone in Garrys Mod, plus Steam.
Check if it works in Skype and everything else.
Check if your Mic is the Default Device in Sound settings in your Control Panel and Steam.
Check sound playback on Sound, Recording and Garry's Mod and Steam.
Update Sound Drivers.
Check if you had use a (push to talk key to transmit voice) in Steam settings.
Made sure your Mic levels are high. on Game and Sound and Steam.

Hopefully this helps :)

Mic works clear in Skype, Teamspeak, online recording websites
Can hear myself fine in the test mic option on both Steam option and Gmod options
I'm holding the button to talk and its definitely not on mute

still doesnt work when i'm in a game

I have just got a brand new laptop (not because of this reason, I needed a new one) and I STILL CANNOT TALK IN GAME IN GMOD.

I have a new headset, a new laptop, checked absolutely everything, can hear myself fine in tests when trying the windows tests, on online recording sites such as vocaroo, on skype, on steam not in a game, on gmod main menu, even in a game in gmod on that menu. All my settings have been checked multiple times, i am definitely not speaking to quiet, i'm defintely holding the push to talk key as I can see my name in a box in game when pushing it but it doesnt have audio waves like other people. Drivers are updated.

WHAT CAN I DO?

When you press Shift + Tab, you go into settings. Click on Voice, and test your microphone just in case. Maybe the transmit volume is not high enough, which explains why.

the problem for me is that the transmit volume just resets whenever i adjust the transmit volume slider. i dont know if its a bug, or something is messed up in settings (checked multiple times, seems alright) but it is affecting my gameplay experience on servers to no small degree, and would like a patch or a solution soon.

I have that problem too. it works perfectly in the test and EVERYTHING else. Just not when I play Gmod.

Set the mic button in keyboard layout to a button, press and hold that when you want to speak

Hope that helps :)

Me too
what you need to do is first, go to steam window click on steam in top left, click settings, go to voice, then click change device, chances are its not assigned to your current headset/microphone. SO select your device and click make default then test you mic and other setting to make sure that worked. Hopefully then your microphone should work in game.
this is what solved the problem for me
