Do you need Half Life 2 Installed?

My old hard drive died, I was wondering if you needed half life 2 installed to receive its textures or is it included with Gmod?

You can get the Demo and it is recommended. Also you either have to download CS:S Texture pack or download the CS:S game to play all of GMod's server content.

I'd reccomend having:
Counter-Strike: Source
Half Life 2: Episodes 1 and 2
Team Fortress 2

Rarer Occurences:
Left 4 Dead 1 and 2
Portal 1 and 2

In terms of content.

You do not need HL2 to have HL2 assets in Gmod. I am 100% certain of this. You only need to mount other games, like CS:S or Episode 1/2.

Only if you bought Gmod itself. The free version does require HL2.

having hl2 allows easier access to certain props such as the hl1 gman and props/effects shown in the e3 2003 trailer. along with easier access to all the props of hl2. otherwise you would end up having to use the search bar and know the specific name of the prop you are looking for.
