If Gmod is a CPU intensive game. Why is my CPU usage always low?
I was checking my task manager while Gmod was on and I always noticed it was on a low level

Normal clocks on AMD FX-6300 %25 used

overclocked to 4.1 ghz %9-%10

Where did you get the information it's a CPU intensive game?

Didn't know it was CPU intensive.
Never had a big CPU usage myself.

This is old but usually for some god forsaken reason some CPUs won't use all their processors so you have to manually goto start>system configuration>boot>advanced options, and then tick the "Number of processors:" box and set it to the max setting you have..

gmod runs default on 2 cores only, but facepunch didnt made it to patch the allocate of all cores in total.

but you can paste this in your autoexec.cfg (create one if you have none)

Add this to your launch options in your GMod properties via your Steam Library. Forces the game to use more threads of your CPU, by default if I remember correctly only uses 1 core so your CPU usage will look low while one core gets pegged out of your 4+.

it makes no sense bc its actually just the same, no matter if steam loads it or the game itself as cfg

Well one is explicitly to enable multi-threading, the other is a performance config that primarily affects visuals of the game.

still not really that advantage trying to force multicore bc it just doesnt do it anyway, or gmod would run at 1000fps+ at these config i sended

normally it runs lower ofc (depends which addons are loaded aswell, like PAC3 takes alot in some cases)

Where did you get this info? I can see in my very own task manager the load go across my 4 threads....? It dramatically boosted my FPS. Not everything scales linearly.

1. Steam can show fps aswell
2. https://i.imgur.com/UBE1ODi.png

even with all those commands the full potential is still not used (intel core i7-6700k 4ghz)

the pac has above 400 parts i think

It isn't going to use every thread, otherwise AMD CPUs would be absolutely destroying it in GMod.

But it will definitely use more than 2 threads, spawning in >1000 props and moving them I can see my threads soar.

Edit: Some people report lower FPS by enabling multi-threaded support in games like CSGO while others experience higher FPS. Do you think that could be at play here in GMod? My CPU is an i5-3570k which is an older architecture, not sure if it has anything to do with that since we don't know how GMod schedules but I have seen on forums people reporting loss of FPS while others report radically different results.
Source Engine?

Edit2: Just realized, why was this 2015 post bumped in the first place?

well my CPU has double thread per Core, so idk tho, Gmod is strange and still unoptimized, even TF2 has better feel that it really uses all of it, so we just have to wait what comes next for gmod updates
Razor4K9165 Jul 7, 2021 @ 7:58pm
its bc gmod runs on a 32bit based engine, so you have only single-core threading, thats5tge Problem, and most DarkRp servers has always so much Sh'it loaded passicely that it obviously lags bc of that

you know you can run a 64-bit version of gmod ? just go to your steam library,right-click on gmod, click on "Properties",go to the "Beta" tab,and pick the "X86-X64" Branch (it also allows the "Media player" addon to work)
