I recently got a new hard drive, and I'm putting all my steam games on it. Many people have got this error before whe trying to open the game, and fixed it by downloading said file from the microsoft site. However, the website has been replaced with a windows 10 download site. Do I seriously have get ♥♥♥♥ing windows 10 just to play garry's mod? This can't be right, my friends have windows 7 and their gmod still opens. I'm begging someone for a solution, I've been searching for hours. Is there way to update directx without windows 10? Please please help.

you can download the direct x file instead of the site that got replaced by the windows 10 site. This guide will tell you where to put it:

I have that problem too! Except I am using a Windows 10 currently, but when I go to open Gmod I get that error and it directs me to the Windows 10 Download page!

I'm having the same problem. I'm currently using Windows 10, and when it says to download it from the mircosoft site, it takes you to a page to download Windows 10 again..

I am trying the link and it says Application not found??? It wont even open the zip folder...
just bought this game for my son, he has windows ten....upgraded everything...6 hours in I am going frickin nuts

You have to extract the zip file and put "D3DX9_40.dll" in "C:/Windows/System32" if you have a 32 bit computer or "C:/Windows/SysWOW64" if you have a 64 bit one. If you don't know what bit computer you have, you can just copy and paste those locations into your windows explorer and see what is there.

I was clicking on the far right link (Manual Fix). I tried the centre one (Fix 1 for Free)

we downloaded the file D3DX9_40.dll from you second link to the desktop; opened the Steam file and dragged the file into the folder "Bin" in "Gary's Mod Apps", then restarted.

I did have that issue but now ive run into another... My hl2.exe keeps going unresponsive and i dont know what is causing it. does anybody know what may be causeing it and maybe even a way to fix it?

You may just have to wait patiently, garry's mod sometimes freezes for a time on startup.
