This happens to me aswell. I've tried joining multiple servers, but everytime I get the "connection failed after 4 retries" notification. The only way I have been able to play is by using the "join friend" feature. However that will only work once, if I try to join a friend again it will only work if I close Garry's Mod and boot it back up. Because of this problem, I am unable to play without my friends and I still have not found a fix anywhere for this other than, "did you try turning off your firewall?" or "have you tried running steam as an administrator?" Well, yes I did try both of those solutions and they didn't work either. Apparently there are a decent amount of people who have this issue but there is still no answer. So my advice, try getting a friend to join a server you want to play on and join their game. Seems to be the only fix for me.

ive still got my forewall but we even tried without but we were trying to connect to each other but 4 retries and it fails. all i want is to play sandbox with my addons and my friend

Do you have a router?
Have you port forwarded ports TCP and UDP 27015?
Have you tried resetting your router/modem(Hold reset for 10 seconds and let it go)?

No. I'm on windows 8 and im also on a laptop. I do have a router though!

i have this problem on 1 server right now and its not on any other servers my firewall allowes garrys mod to do what ever its wants to.

I'm having this problem. I can connect to just about any murder server EXCEPT the one I want to join. I am connected directly to a modem, with the firewall on it set as low as it can go. I used to be able to play on this server just a week or two ago, but now I can't get anything passed "Connection failed after 4 retries".

You have to wait it out. Mine fixed it's self. It took a year for me though :/
