How do addons work in multiplayer servers?

I'm fairly new to Gmod.I've been joining servers and in all of them I couldn't use my own addons,such as my character models,yet in the servers I see others with their own models and other addons.How does this work?

Here's a summary:
When you join a server, the owners disable all your addons automatically and force you to download the addons that the server uses, called "Server Content". This server content are addons meant to make servers function properly, like textures or custom models.
You cannot see your own models due to them being disabled by the server and ALL server content you have downloaded are placed in the files downloads and downloadlists.
You can delete the contents of these files whenever you want to.

No, it saves it so that it takes less time to load back in after the first time playing.

Is there a mod where I can use my own mods in someone's server? It's so boring when I join my friend's server and there's no mods to play with.
