I have heard that gmod requires half life 2 and a couple of other games. is this true?

Well... mostly for the textures. Tf2, L4D/2 or war aren't really needed. But the game will be more fun if you have HF2/1/2 and CSS

Yeah, but just a heads up, you will encounter A LOT OF MAPS that need CS:S content

Look at the steam store to see how much they cost all together. Once you download them, play the games for a little bit then re join Garry's mod and I think it would automatically mount

Basically, just CS:S if you're on a budget.
You can follow a free, legal, and complicated method of doing it by using steamcmd.
Google "CS:S textures steamcmd gmod"

HL2:EP2 is also a big one. There are many more but i generally don't see a lot that use HL1/TF2 textures.

If you want to get it all, i think the valve pack is on sale. Getting it all is costly but rewards with best game experience. (Plus, if you want some other games, you can get them)

You dont need Half life 2, but to have more materials and have the game to work better, you will need it. Other games are just for less missing textures and to have more props and other materials.

While in-game you can press the controller on the bottom left corner of the screen to see the list of games you can have for the game. (While in main menu). The most common resources are Half-Life 2 (Which you should have because Gmod is a mod of Half-Life 2, if you don't have it I hate you.) and Counter-Strike: Source. If You don't want to buy the games, I think there's a website called c s c h e a t e r where you can find the content from tons of source games like tf2 and day of defeat and such. Just download the content (and maps if you want) and drop the files into your addons folder. And you ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, some maps do, I'm not saying they're absolutely required, I'm saying they could be useful.
