Well, in the years since I had this issue, I've found that this is usually caused by addons with corrupted versions of the foliage textures. Try disabling your addons page-by-page (especially maps and texture packs), loading a map with tall grass, and reloading the map/game with less addons enabled each time, until the white squares go away. When the white squares go away, reverse the process addon-by-addon instead of page-by-page until you find the addon causing it. I know it seems tedious, but it's the best way. Generally, you shouldn't have tons of old, large addons either. It's almost always an addon's fault, but you can also try verifying the integrity of the game files if it happens with no addons enabled at all.
Remember that you can disable addons without unsubscribing in the in-game "addons" menu, as well.
Lastly, it's best not to post on 6 year old discussions, and instead report your issues yourself, that way you're more likely to get help that is relevant to your case. As an added bonus, you also don't remind the author of said 6 year old thread how abhorrent their writing style was back then. Or how atrocious their addons list was back then.
