[Solved] Display Driver Failed To Start
Whenever I attempt to start up GMOD the screen flashes gray to black multiple times before Windows gives me the notification "Display driver failed to start". After it does, my driver is disabled until I restart the computer or reinstall the driver. I've tried updating my driver through GeForce Experience multiple times. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the driver. But the problem persists. Help?
Specs:
Windows 10
Nvidia GTX 970
AMD FX-8350
12 GB RAM

Go to your launch options for Garry's Mod and type -gl

Does this happen on other games? Did you recently tweak a setting (prior to -gl) in Garry's Mod?
When did this start happening?

I started Black Desert Online the other day and it worked fine, I haven't tweaked a setting yet and it just started today when I downloaded the game and tried playing it.

And to confirm it's just this game I downloaded and played Dishonored just fine

Just to test, what happens if you underclock your GPU a bit? My friend had this issue with his 290 and underclocking it a bit (50-75Mhz~ on core and memory) helped. (He had a faulty 290, but it's worth the test.)

I underclocked it 75Mhz on core and memory and got the same problem

Are you on beta drivers? What if you go to a driver from October?
Rabbit Nov 14, 2017 @ 4:42pm
I'm not on any beta drivers and when I downgraded the same problem occured. Also, I downloaded Left 4 Dead 2 and CSGO and when I try to start either of them up it gives me the error "Failed to create D3D device"(With and without a downgraded driver). (Guessing it's all valve games)

I FIXED IT, after all this time the problem causing it was that I wasn't using the "Recommended Resolution" in my Display Settings. What a big waste of time lmao. Thanks for helping out, I appreciate it!

It sounds like you have a corrupt driver, that D3D device error is usually if your GPU's drivers aren't working and won't work with DirectX.

http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/display-driver-uninstaller-download.html

Read this page and uninstall your drivers, this tool thoroughly uninstalld drivers, down to the registries and cache. Any problem your driver may have had will be removed, you can then boot back up and install your new drivers.

EDIT: Oh alright well that works, no idea why that would cause that error, Windows + Nvidia = disaster couple.
