Dedicated hosting is great, if you port forward and home host that's my #1 method, I highly recommend it. In my opinon it's more fun to manage your own network security, uptime, miniature 'infastructure', and to have your physical server machine that you can play with. That's the real fun for enthusiastics and hobbyists, versus paying money on a monthly basis for a datacenter to run you alongside 20+ other servers on the same machine.

However port forwarding with ignorance is a dangerous game, you can suffer DDoS attacks, I plan to write documentation on my website on how to properly secure yourself from such attacks and how to stay out of dodgy situations. For the time being, just try to not piss people off in your servers.

That's cool beans. I just have my ports forwarded for the game so I can start a game through the menu to play with my friends.

I was thinking about using one of our extra computers to host public servers off of, but I didn't want to do it without having some form of protection for it. Having our internet DDos'd would be pretty uncool beans.

Thanks to the toxicity of the GMod community, DDoS attacks are something to be worried about by every server owner. In fact, I've been on quite a few servers that have come under a DDoS attack. They were all just crappy DarkRP servers, so I didn't really care, but still.

When you start a game via the menu it's P2P now, no longer a need for port forwarding. (I like that but at the same time part of the fun is port forwarding)

I've got 10Gbps of DDoS mitigation for my home servers, I can expand to a dedicated 100Gbps link. If you have Linux or a mid-high end firewall I can see if I can set the same up for you if you're interested.

Bah, don't worry about it. All our computers use Windows and I don't have the other computer anyway. Besides, even with all my hours I don't know if I would actually be a good public host, I mainly just join other servers or play with my friends anyway. But your knowledge about that sort of stuff is pretty cool.

Alright, if you're ever interested or if somebody else is interested then I'm always willing to help out.

I was also making a method that works with Windows too and doesn't require any special equipment or port forwarding, it acts as DDoS mitigation.

I dont know if I ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up something , but I used to be able to start a public server by clicking create game , and selecting 2 players , and now its not working anymore , and I instead have to port foward , otherwise my friends cant join .

First, this post is 1 year old.
Second, are you sure P2P is on?

I definetly DO NOT recomend first time users port forwarding their Ip address for a gmod server, it will make you vulnerable to dox, and most likely you already don't know what you are doing, so you will not be able to protect yourself.

Port Forward isnt just some switch you flip to play a game, i strongly recommend against port forward unless you like 10 year olds dossing your internet down for days.

Plus it's a really crappy way to run a server, it will only be a fast or powerful as the pc you run it off of, and lets face it, you barely get 10fps already dont ya.

Cheers

intel i2500 3.3 Ghz
GeForce gtx 680
8gb of ram

enough said about the fps problem for gmod

And as for port fowarding , I only did it so a mate and I could play maps together

This is wrong, it is again unlikely all of your personal information will get leaked if you port forward and it isn't a crappy way to run a server, GMod servers run just fine on old hardware. My $7 Xeon runs 32 player PropHunt servers at 66tick with 0 dips and 0 choke. You can run servers at home and get DDoS protection too by the way.

Your i5-2500 could run a decently sized server, if it's for you and friends this is more than plenty.
