As an experiment I remapped the key binds via the in-game options panel so that the D-Pad controls the camera view instead of the right joystick. Same result. The configuration saves, I enter the game and everything works as expected except the 'look up' and 'look down' functions are non-existent for the game controller. The keyboard and mouse work fine even with the game controller attached.
For what it is worth - I successfully configured the Steelseriec 3GC game controller with Steam Big Picture mode. I did find that the controller works best when set to 'analog' mode. The other difference is that the Steam Big Picture mode starts the numbering of buttons with zero '0' instead of one '1'.
Based on the above, I am guessing that this is a game configuration issue rather than a game controller issue.
Does anyone know where to obtain information on Portal configuration files. It may just take a few changes in the configuration file to resolve all of the issues reported in this thread.
One other thing I found is that my copy of the Portal config.cfg file appears to be written for Linux. The text file is created without the CRLF common in Windows text files. Word Pad will format the file correctly, but I'm concerned that any updates with Wordpad will add a CRLF instead of the usual Linux LF only.
