DX8 Default Problem

VALVe were fixed this problem for HL2, but not in Portal. Fix this please.

If you want a temporary fix for the time being, enter "mat_dxlevel 95" into the console when you start the game and after you apply advanced video settings.

It still doesn't work for me in HL2, but anyway a better way to apply the fix that "xslouis" mentioned is to put a "+" in front of it and put it in the launch options for the game (right click game, choose properties, set launch options). So it should look like this: "+mat_dxlevel 95" without the "".

I am running Windows 8, card - Nvidia Geforce 360m.

Just type into the startup options (Properties -> set launch options) and put +mat_dxlevel 95

Portal has stopped working for me after behaving fine for years. I get a stutter in the audio and then the screen goes black and sometimes causes my video card to reset. Is this the problem being referred to here? I tried the +mat_dxlevel 95 suggestion above with no luck. Did a clean install of both the Steam client and Portal, again with no luck.

I am using Windows 7 64 bit (SP1 plus all security fixes), NVIDIA Geforce GTX 580 card with the latest drivers (320.49 - backed out to 310.xx version with no luck), 12 Gb ram, Intel i7 CPU, etc. etc. As I said, this game has run fine forever on this machine.

Anything else I can do or am I SOL?

I'd have to look into your problem. It's most likely the use of steampipe.
