Portal "custom" folder Error help
So i'm trying to install a cool portal gun skin from gamebanana: http://portal.gamebanana.com/skins/40952

This skin comes with it's own "models" folder with everything else however, i made a folder called "custom" and read the instructions but it wouldn't work. I even tried to make a "materials" folder and put the skin in there (also following the instructions), but that didn't work either. Why don't custom skins work?

When i start up the game it tells me this:

"Tried to add C:\Program Files(x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Portal\portal\custom\models as a search path.

This is probably not what you intended.

Check C:\Program Files(x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Portal\portal\custom\readme.txt for more info"

This is the correct folder structure:
game / custom / <mod_folder>

You can name the <mod_folder> whatever you want (new_portalgun_skin, new_chell_model, etc.), this is were the models/materials folders should be placed.

So, in the end it should look like this:

portal / custom / portalgun_skin / materials / <texture files>
portal / custom / portalgun_skin / models / <model files>

It's not working. I don't know why Portal just won't accept one mod, whereas Portal 2 could without any hassle...

It can't get any simpler, you must be doing something wrong. Also, define "It's not working."

In the "custom" folder (that i created since it didn't have one), i made a folder in that one called "portalgun_skin" just like you told me, and since it's a skin i then made a folder in that one called "materials."

After that it didn't work, and then i created the "models" folder and put the skin in there but still nothing.

Here's the path i followed the first time: C:\Program Files(x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Portal\portal\custom\portalgun_skin\materials\v_portalgun.vtf (the mod file)

Then i tried this path the second time around: C:\Program Files(x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Portal\portal\custom\portalgun_skin\models\v_portalgun.vtf

I tried the instructions that it came with but that didn't work either. This is what i meant by "not working"

The funny thing is, is that the error i described in the main post was probably a sign that was the right way to do it, but Portal said "no" otherwise. All the other attempts made Portal startup, but in-game changed nothing.

Oh and i did re-verify the game cache a few times but to no avail.

Now I see what the problem is. You have to keep the same subfolder structure of the game.

The portal gun texture path is: materials \ models \ weapons \ v_models \ v_portalgun \

So in the end your custom folder should look like this:
custom\portalgun_skin\materials\models\weapons\v_models\v_portalgun\v_portalgun.vtf
What if it's not a portal gun skin?
