The color of each portal contrasts with the other, making it easier to tell which portal is which. Neither portal is as good as it is without that contrast.

That said, the orange portal contrasts more with the cold environments of Aperture Science facility than the blue portal. Some areas use warm colors, but most don't, so the orange portal is at least slightly better overall.
