How to make portals look like portal 2 style

In every video i watch of portal on steam and youtube, the portals look like the portal 2 portals, how do you do you guys do that?

You're portal might be stuck in Directx 8. Try adding "-dxlevel 90" to your launch options to force it into directx 9

It's grayed out in the options, though, and i can't change it, are the "launch options" different from the in game ones?

In the steam library, right-click the game and go to properties, then click launch options and add that.

There is one problem though, the resolution changes to the lowest possible ever time i start up the game, so i have to change it back each time i play :/ thanks for helping me fixing the portals effect though

Oops, yeah forgot to mention that after you launched it in -dxlevel 90 you have to take it out of launch options. It will stay in Dx9 afterwards so you don't have to worry; But having -dxlevel 90 in the launch options constantly resets the video options to default settings.
