that is, probably, the toughest challenge in the game. you can beat it on Gold with a portal-bumping, read the guide below to learn more
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2161491036
you also can trim few steps by using a save-button-glitch, but it quite hard to do with a good timing
overall, I am not sure what Valve were thinking here - without portal-bumping, wallclimbing (which is not a good option here to begin with) and save-button-glitch - the only option to get a Gold medal is a BunnyHop or Accelerated BunnyHop, where the latter is very hard to perform for 90% of players and the former gives you few steps off here and there...
Thanks !!! I am going to try this guide, it was just what I was looking for because in many YouTube videos people use portal-bumping but they did not explain how to do it. Yes, I don't know what valve thought when doing these challenges, it is almost impossible to do without BunnyHop...
just checked and verified - without jumping once, apart from first section of the level, (so, no BunnyHoping at all) and with just a portal-bumping (no save-button-glitch) I managed to beat that level in 141 steps with being extremely sloppy,

to ensure that you will have enough steps, make sure that in this point you have ~90 steps,

portal-bumping is pretty basic and straightforward trick, it just requires a bit of practice and proper placement of the first portal - it has to be exactly perpendicularly to your position. practice a bit on some big and open space and you will see how it works. if you cannot make that trick work, then try to align yourself close to the wall and shoot portal before you (it will help you to put first portal correctly)
Hey!!! your guide was very helpful, I was able to complete the challenge with 144 steps using portal-bumping, it's hard at first but on the third or fourth try I was able to do it, really helpful, thanks, it´s possible to do it on chamber 18 ?
for Chamber 18 it is easier to do Edge-Glitch (see the same guide). it is more tricky than Portal-Bump, but it allows you to finish that Chamber in 5 portals/15 seconds/18 steps (or even better). mind exactly where to put portals. check that video that shows hos that trick work,

The challenges aren't impossible they are just designed to be very hard. That's why we have a brain.
fixed that for you
Well thats seems confusing, i'll try it, portal is full of glitches. Again, your guides are really helpful
if you can't do Edge-Glitch, then just try in a regular way - that Chamber is quite generous in terms of required number of steps, portal or time
I bet you can do it without any glitches at all, with a practice and lots of saving/loading. compare to Chamber 17 that challenge is way easier, I think
finally i made it, with and without glitches, thank you so much!!!
