Check it regularly, and save often, in case a camera doesn't register properly.
Alls gud now, apparently achievement debug 0 saved me and i just had 6 more cameras to get

To see the count at other times, pause the game to see the main menu, click Achievements, then scroll the list down to Camera Shy. Note that this count is only shown on the IN-GAME achievement list, NOT on the Steam achievement list.
While Transmission Received radios can be found at any time in any order, Camera Shy must be done as part of one playthrough. Camera Shy progress is stored in save files, so when you launch Portal the in-game achievement list will not show a camera count until you have loaded a previous save.
