Just Google it...

This took me like 3 seconds of googleing...

Step 1
Download and install GCFScape and VTFEdit.

Step 2
Using GCFScape, open the "portal_pak_dir.vpk" file found in this folder:
Steam \ SteamApps \ common \ Portal \ portal

Inside the window that just popped up, follow this path to get to the original Portal Gun texture:
materials / models / weapons / v_models / v_portalgun /

Select the "v_portalgun.vtf" file and drag it to any folder in your HDD.

Step 3
Using VTFEdit, open the "v_portalgun.vtf" file. You should now be seeing the Portal gun texture.
Press CTRL+E to export the image, select the location and format you want. I'd choose PNG.

Step 4
Modify the image to your needs and save it.

Step 5
Open VTFEdit, press CTRL+I to import your image. You'll see a "VTF Options" window, don't change anything, press "OK" and your image should load without problems.

Press CTRL+S to save it as a VTF file, and give it this name "v_portalgun" (the original name).

Step 6
You're almost there, all you have to do is move this file to a location where the game can see it.
This location, to be exact: Steam \ SteamApps \ common \ Portal \ portal

Create a new folder there and call it "custom", create another folder inside and call it whatever you want (eg: new_portalgun).

Inside this last folder you should create the folder where the VTF file will be placed, you should do this following the same folder structure used by the game, that is, the path of the texture file in Step 2.

If you did everything right your folder structure should look like this:
Steam \ SteamApps \ common \ Portal \ portal \ custom \ new_portalgun \ materials \ models \ weapons \ v_models \ v_portalgun \ v_portalgun.vtf

Step 7
Open the game to see your texture.

Which part didn't work?
Are you creating an original skin, or using an already made one?

Would this work for any skin mod?

you go on Gambanana[gamebanana.com], chose a skin, and follow the instructions they give you on the skin's page/in the readme file that comes with a file.

i know this is a pretty old thread and this is a really small issue, but even though the portal gun looks fine from the first person perspective, when i look at it through a portal its still the original texture. anyway to fix this?
