Black Screen??
I bought the game yesterday and downloaded it but I just get a black screen on start-up. I can hear the game sound, valve intro music, and the sound of menu butons but there is nothing else. I tried starting the game in windowed mode, changing the resolution, trying compatibility mode but to no avail. Could anybody help me please?

Im having the same problem. I believe it has to do with Windows 10 or something, because my computer is more than fit to run Portal. Mater of fact, I actually got to play a bit when I decided to change the video configurations from inside the game. After I did that, the game went black and only the sounds could be heard. So basically the problem has to do with windows

OK, I just solved the problem mere seconds ago so you may be one lucky guy buddy. My pc is a laptop and thus it has Intel HD built in. I went to my control panel and forced the game to use "INTEL HD". Yep, you heard that right, running the game with the dedicated GPU gives me blackscreen but Intel HD does not. Hope this also works for you, you may need to do it other way around though.

"Black screen" problems can often be fixed using launch options.
As well as changing graphical options such as resolution or windowed mode, you can do an "autoconfig", or use "safe mode" :

I have windows 10 and it works fine.

man...
