So my friend thinks that Minecraft started "the cake is a lie" meme, I keep telling him that it was portal that started it, but he won't listen, so I figured if I asked half the dang world I would get the right answer and prove it to him, so the question is simple (for his sake): Was Portal the game that started "the cake is a lie"?
I already know the answer, but he won't shut up about it.

Have him play portal or watch a full game play-through or something like a game analysis Channel...The meme "The cake is a lie" references the text scrawled on one of Rattmann's dens in the first Portal game (I believe that it was the chamber with the Companion Cube but it might also be able to be found in others) It is also evident that portal started it because this very phrase can be found on portal merchandise which is sold for profit...Such as wristbands (at my book store near where I live) and shirts I believe...

Oh! I just realized why your friend would think that minecraft started it! It's because of the Achievement in Minecraft! When you make cake it says "the cake is a lie" which (if your friend played portal) he would know as a direct reference to the game portal...Games will often reference other games especially if the creators of that game play and enjoy other games... It's a polite nod

I know about the achievemant, he just didn't play portal, and thinks it's dumb cause one of my friends that he doesn't like played the game, long story short my friends stubborn, and I figured if I asked on steam he would actually listen.

Yeah I know he is, but he won't listen to anyone, all I can say is if Portal can stay alive (get it?) then one day I might be able to get him to play it, that and he doesn't have a steam account so either way he probably won't play it for a long time

I know, but as a gamer that knows his crap, I take it as a personal mission to teach him the stuff he doesn't know, dispite how stubborn he is, I mean for gods sake he didn't even know what MegaMan was until I told him last year.
