In the turret room, you need to kill all the turrets and then double fling yourself (fling and then put a portal under you so you fling again) from a little ramp bit near where a turret was, up to a second ramp that can't be portaled onto from the ground, then double fling yourself from that to land in a catwalk.
Does that mean that implementing cheat codes through the console thing messes the game up? But I recently wrote that I did that before and the only problems that occured was Portal crashing from the fire rocket projectile cheat before level 19 and adding way too many cube boxes (even got squished to death after summoning 10 at once).
Also I tried single and double flinging, but in the end single flinging worked. But yeah, other times I had to double fling in order to get there. Do you also know why the game crashes when I try to fire rockets before level 19?
1. No codes you put in messed the game up, don't worry.
However, ones that change gravity, for instance, DO change the physics.
2. Probably because the levels that have rockets have specific code or an entity for them, and the previous ones lack that.
1. But when I add so many cubes, the console says the cubes messed up the positioning of whatever (I'm still new to PC gaming and coding). What is bunny hopping and what do you mean by engine altering commands? Were the cheatcodes not counted as those?
2. I figured that much but then some levels lack energy balls while all levels lack metal spheres. When I do add those to the levels, why doesn't it crash the game?
3. This is not relevant but how do you clear the challenge maps and advanced levels? I just cheat my way through with cheatcodes.
1. No idea what the positioning error is about.
Bunny hopping is when you run forward, sway your mouse from side to side and jump perfectly (immediately after you land, you jump again).
Basically gravity or speed cheats.
2. Energy balls are reused from HL2, which this game's physics engine is the exact same as. Therefore the entity is built into the game, while the rockets may be an entity that only reacts properly to specific environments.
As for the metal ball, it's basically the same as the cube but with a different hitbox.
3. I can't really say, mostly because I don't remember those levels as well and it's been a long time since I played.
1. So that's why I kept ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ up so much! I never even realized that I did this the whole time and was the reason why I struggled so damn much... Since you can mod PC games, shouldn't Valve or the Steam community created a patch to fix bunny hopping?
3. I beat all of them by adding the cheat codes since you can only beat them if you're extremely skilled at Portal or you have no life and experiment on each level for hours. You can stop replying to this discussion unless you want to thank me.
1. It doesn't permanently break the engine, it just lets you increase your speed faster than it should be if you were walking normally.
It's basically the preservation of speed; you can maintain speed from falling off a slope with it.
So you're probably not suffering from that, I just brought it up in the first place since I don't think it was an intended feature of the physics engine, therefore being a "bug" in it.
Check your options, and make sure "Portal Funnel" is ENABLED.
That will make you go straight up and down through floor portals, as long as you don't press any movement keys.
So that's what the portal funnel capability was for! I thought it was for some kind of reticle or something for your portal gun... Thanks for the advice, I now know why the physics get messed up when you enter a portal through the floor and cieling. Yeesh! I previously disabled it because I seriously had no idea of what it actually did and found no difference at all until now. In the future, I will remember to not disable it so it will help me instead of getting so frustrated.
Update: I also found out that disabling the raw input had somewhat of a negative impact on my experience in Portal, so I activated it again and adjusted the mouse acceleration.
