Portal
Physics In Portal Are Messed Up! >:(
So back then Portal would be fine for me for the most part until the later levels due to lack of skill and experience. But as I play more and more, I notice that the physics when it comes to flinging and momentum in this game cen get ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up at times and it pisses the ♥♥♥♥ out of me! I've gotten better to overcome or reduce this limitation, but in level 18 and level 19 is when I really start to ragequit.

Like in level 18, the final room with the very tall platforms - why the hell do I keep falling into the dirty water? Back then that would only happen if I put a portal in the center of the bottom pit (to the left with the first platform in the dirty water in front of you), not at the edges of it. Also I noticed that the change in gravity makes it hard to exit the portals when one is on the floor and the other on the ceiling.

I have died so many times just trying to beat the level when back then I only had trouble because I lacked the skill and experience to solve those puzzles. And then we have level 19 with the huge room where you fight the turrets and before the one or two rooms leading to the final boss. You know that angled platform that you use to fling yourself to the ledge where you fight the two turrets?

I keep performing the flinging and momentum tactics dozens upon dozens of times and I could not reach that ledge! I got so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ angry as much as I did when I played Monster Hunter for the first time!!!! Back then it took me a couple tries before I succeeded but for some reason this time I just kept ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ up until I calmed the hell down and then tried and then succeeded.

I understand that if you use cheatcodes during the levels which I did, it will negatively affect the physics; however, I never even used any cheat codes in that room. And the previous playthrough I used the adding cube cheat code and nothing bad like that happened. I know for a fact that using the rocket projectile code before level 19 crashes the game.

Of course I also understand that in the challenge stages or advanced maps where obstacles are added or items that aid you are removed or added, the physics are intentionally changed to make it more difficult. And it's not just limited to the portal physics, it also affects the character's jumping, falling, and throwing. Please give me an explanation ASAP!!!

Physics are ok i think, however if u dont like them u cant port portal 1 maps to portal 2

My memory is also bad since I suffer from anxiety from dysfunctional people I dealt with before university (dealt with some egotistical people again few months back). So often times I actually forget how to solve certain puzzles or implement certain game mechanics, which is a minor cause of me ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ up. Please tell me how to beat that room in level 19 so I won't ever forget it ever again since IGN and other sites don't give a specific description?

The physics are fine. They never change during gameplay, and only bug out if you intentionally break it with engine altering commands or abnormal movement like bunny-hopping.

In the turret room, you need to kill all the turrets and then double fling yourself (fling and then put a portal under you so you fling again) from a little ramp bit near where a turret was, up to a second ramp that can't be portaled onto from the ground, then double fling yourself from that to land in a catwalk.

Does that mean that implementing cheat codes through the console thing messes the game up? But I recently wrote that I did that before and the only problems that occured was Portal crashing from the fire rocket projectile cheat before level 19 and adding way too many cube boxes (even got squished to death after summoning 10 at once).

Also I tried single and double flinging, but in the end single flinging worked. But yeah, other times I had to double fling in order to get there. Do you also know why the game crashes when I try to fire rockets before level 19?

1. No codes you put in messed the game up, don't worry.

However, ones that change gravity, for instance, DO change the physics.

2. Probably because the levels that have rockets have specific code or an entity for them, and the previous ones lack that.

1. But when I add so many cubes, the console says the cubes messed up the positioning of whatever (I'm still new to PC gaming and coding). What is bunny hopping and what do you mean by engine altering commands? Were the cheatcodes not counted as those?

2. I figured that much but then some levels lack energy balls while all levels lack metal spheres. When I do add those to the levels, why doesn't it crash the game?

3. This is not relevant but how do you clear the challenge maps and advanced levels? I just cheat my way through with cheatcodes.

1. No idea what the positioning error is about.

Bunny hopping is when you run forward, sway your mouse from side to side and jump perfectly (immediately after you land, you jump again).

Basically gravity or speed cheats.

2. Energy balls are reused from HL2, which this game's physics engine is the exact same as. Therefore the entity is built into the game, while the rockets may be an entity that only reacts properly to specific environments.

As for the metal ball, it's basically the same as the cube but with a different hitbox.

3. I can't really say, mostly because I don't remember those levels as well and it's been a long time since I played.

1. So that's why I kept ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ up so much! I never even realized that I did this the whole time and was the reason why I struggled so damn much... Since you can mod PC games, shouldn't Valve or the Steam community created a patch to fix bunny hopping?

3. I beat all of them by adding the cheat codes since you can only beat them if you're extremely skilled at Portal or you have no life and experiment on each level for hours. You can stop replying to this discussion unless you want to thank me.

1. It doesn't permanently break the engine, it just lets you increase your speed faster than it should be if you were walking normally.

It's basically the preservation of speed; you can maintain speed from falling off a slope with it.

So you're probably not suffering from that, I just brought it up in the first place since I don't think it was an intended feature of the physics engine, therefore being a "bug" in it.

Okay so then what is the problem then? I realized mouse sensitivity was too low (intentional) so I increased it after beating level 19. That was my sixth playthrough of the entire game, therefore it wasn't because I sucked or was inexperienced.

Problems at the end of Chamber 18 (and other places where flings are required) are often due to a particular setting being disabled.

Check your options, and make sure "Portal Funnel" is ENABLED.

That will make you go straight up and down through floor portals, as long as you don't press any movement keys.

So that's what the portal funnel capability was for! I thought it was for some kind of reticle or something for your portal gun... Thanks for the advice, I now know why the physics get messed up when you enter a portal through the floor and cieling. Yeesh! I previously disabled it because I seriously had no idea of what it actually did and found no difference at all until now. In the future, I will remember to not disable it so it will help me instead of getting so frustrated.

Also my mouse has been used for several years now and it's not a gaming mouse so the sensitivity is nowhere near close to said mouse.

Update: I also found out that disabling the raw input had somewhat of a negative impact on my experience in Portal, so I activated it again and adjusted the mouse acceleration.
