I would honestly rate Vampyr higher than this
Because i read that this game was based of a pen and paper RPG game, i thought this game would be an open world game, but its not, its most linear.

I am also aware that the same people who made this game also made Vampyr.......it even has the same voice actor player the main protagonist in both games. The conversation system in this game is pretty much the same as it is in Vampyr......but id honestly have to say, id rate Vampyr higher than this game. Vampyr has more action in it, you definitely do more fighting in Vampyr. Im up to chapter 14, and the closest ive come to an actual fight, was that part where you controlled Sarah, and you had to stand in all those glyphs to defeat that monster. All this game is, is just wondering around inspecting objects most of the time, and making conversation with people, thats pretty much all it is!!!.

That part of the game where you had to keep picking up laterns and going through weird doors, that part was so irritating and rather boring at the same time.

Well the two games have very different focus points, so I wouldn't compare them 1:1, also Vampyr is made by Dontnot and Call of Cthulhu is made by Cyanide, so they are not made by the same people. I've also played both and I like them for different reasons. In Vampyr you play a doctor turned vampire with an array of supernatural abilities, hence a more combat focused game. In Call of Cthulhu you play a normal detective with alcoholic tendencies, here the more investigative focus is more appropriate imo. I don't think "action" would have worked with what I think they were aiming for in Call of Cthulhu. You do get into a gunfight late in the game
I'm also stuck thinking who you would fight in Call of Cthulhu? The shambler is the only real thread and gunning down the locals seems like it would make for a very weird game experience. It would be a completely different story for action to work. I think The Sinking City is more akin to what you were hoping this would have been like, but I haven't played it yet so it's just my impression of what I have seen so far.

Edit: I just wanted to add that Dontnod, who made Vampyr, also made the Life is Strange series, which is even more "making conversation with people" based than Call of Cthulhu.

I completed Call of Cthulhu yesterday, so no spoilers can ruin it for me now.

I wont be playing through it again thats for sure. Someone on gamefaqs went and said that Call of Cthulhu was principally like an old mouse point and click type game, like Monkey Island or Broken Sword, and to be honest id have to agree with them.

Not the most exciting of games ive played i must admit. The main reason i went for it was because i read that the game is based off a pen and paper type RPG, so i was hoping it would have been an open world game, but its not, its 100% linear. Life is Strange 1 was quite good, because it was a detective type game aswell. LIS 2 wasnt as good.

You might want to check out The Sinking City i mentioned, it's lovecraftian, open world and made by the people who makes the Sherlock Holmes games. It's not out on Steam yet but coming this year.

I didn't really expect Call of Cthulhu to be anything else than linear, I don't really know how you got that idea, just because it's based on another property?

I like a walking sim or point and click once in a while so "action" and combat aspects are not necessarily something needed for me to enjoy a game. But I can see if your expectations was wildly different that the game was disappointing.

Look into Stygian : Regin of the Old Ones. It is a cRPG, inspired by Lovecraft. It is an Indie Developer game, so it won't have the bells at whistles you get with a AAA. There is also a Demo you can try for free.

It's not based on a pen and paper RPG game, it's based on the H.P. Lovecraft novels from the early 1900's that the PnP game is based on. The novels are slow burn horrors that tell a story where the protagonist is way out of his league and most of them do not even contain combat scenes at all.

Now, Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth was definitely more based on the PnP game, and contained a lot more action sequences. I would say that it is also the better game, though the graphics are more dated (still good, considering), but it has some technical issues with current hardware. Both games are retellings of the same story and are very similar, but Dark Corners of the Earth has all the action that this game was missing. If you're willing to look past the more dated graphics, you'll find a better Cthulhu game.
I've actually played far more of this then Vampyr. I stopped Vampyr after the first hour & couldn't get back into it. This one I just played nearly 8 hours straight without stopping. Granted I need to re start up Vampyr & try it again. Maybe ill do so after this game. Either or.. They are 2 completely different stories.. You win some, you lose some.. Can't please everybody.
