Missing clue item (SPOILERS)

I recently started chapter 5 and while exploring I found a police officer's badge underneath a medical chair, however shortly after I was caught by a patrol and sent to my last checkpoint (which was apparently after looking at a lever in the room in which the medical chair resides). When I reloaded I can not find the item in my inventory, clues or any other mention of it, nor is it on the floor where I found it.

Is this item important to the plot? It's as if the item never existed in my current game. Can I restart the chapter without starting a new game?

To answer my own post, the item gives a conversation option with Bradley when you run into him at the mansion, but I don't think the item changes any elements of the story in a major fashion.
