At what point is spot hidden "worth it" to level up?
pretty basic question. At what point do i really need to be dumping points into this? Don't want to miss stuff, but also don't want to dump 30 points into the skill at the very start and find out i don't need more then level 2 till the last 2-4 hours of the game.

Would like to know this as well.

Spot Hidden will make certain sections easier by letting you effectively skip certain "puzzles" but any point where you can use it will have multiple solutions so it isn't strictly necessary for completing the game. However you will require it if you wish to obtain all of the games achievements as there are certain items that won't spawn without points in the skill.

I've trying to find out about this lately, since I'm interested in getting all achievements. I've heard one should put all their skill points to Spot Hidden at the very start of the game. Inside that room where you find that bottle of whisky you give those two drunkards to get access to the Hawkins warehouse there's a letter that only spawns if you have at least level 4 Spot Hidden, and apparently getting this letter is crucial to get an achievement. The only way to have 4 Spot Hidden at that point is by putting all your skill points to Spot Hidden at the very beginning.

My conclusion is, if you're interested in getting all achievements in one playthrough, make sure you also get to pass the strength test to get to the warehouse via the underground tunnel, since there's a tribe mural to be seen there that's also required for another achievement. Both the letter must spawn and the strength test must be passed. If any of these two fails, you should restart the game (which shouldn't be a problem at that early stage of the game).

Only problem wtih Spot Hidden is it can leave you puzzled as if you're missing something due to your own fault. Like when you have to open the grate early on and you need three parts to assemble the mechanism, but the third one is dependent on your skill level in order to spawn. You could be left with only two pieces and wondering whether the game has bugged out or not.

Not true. Just finished the game and got all collection achievements, yet I put most points to occultism and medicine at the start. That said, Spot Hidden was the first skill I maxed out.

You put most points to occultism and medicine at the start? You mean the only two skills you can't put points into, and must be leveled up by collecting and examining things?

Are you sure you played this game? LoL

Besides, the quote you try to discredit is true. The only way to have 4 Spot Hidden by chapter 2 is by putting all skill points to Spot Hidden at the start of the game. I'm not saying you need it to get all achievements. But there's a letter inside a little room in chapter 2 that I've heard will only spawn if you have 4 Hidden Spot. I'm NOT 100% sure about this, I didn't test this.

You can't put points you gain during gameplay in those skills but you can put points in them during character creation in prologue.

I didn't know this, so I apologize to DakotaThrice. But, in my defense, I'll say I thought he was trolling, because he doesn't own the game. Anyway, thank you for point that out, sir.

I don't own the game but if you check my profile you'll see I have all of the games achievements and so clearly have played it. In this case I played it through library sharing but the game being revoked due to Humble's pricing error would also explain why I don't own the game.
