Shambler chapter 6
I'm tired of dying over and over to this thing, and I've played too many hours to refund. I was enjoying the game up 'til now.

What's the strategy? I've tried running, crouching, light on, light off, not look at, trying to estimate it's whereabouts and sneak around it, but to no avail. It is so much frickin' faster than you are. I've skimmed through the discussions allready posted on this but it really doesn't help me. Was there an update to make it faster or something? It's AI seems programmed to go towards you even if it hasn't spotted you as well, so you can't wait him out.

Of course the game saves right as you trigger it as well, so I can't get the knife beforehand. Otherwise I would absolutely have gone with that as it may have made this section a little less frustrating.

If you know beforehand where the knife is try and sneak or run to that and then run to the painting and cut it. I got killed over and over because I didn't know what to do then I read about that and I got it on the second try.
yep find the knife location and then just keep ya cool and get to that painting and stab that sucker back to disneyland

It was a rather frustrating part of the game, but I found it manageable. From your hidden starting location try to quickly sneak further back to the wall and hide behind the large statue. From there sneak into nearby the corner room. Hide in the closet if the Shambler spotted you on the way and wait for it to be gone.
Wait for a few seconds and then run past the main entrance doors to the other corner room, again hiding in the closet if necessary.
Wait a little while, then go to the corner showcase, smash it, and grab the dagger. The shambler will likely hear this, but the closet is nearby and you should be able to make it in before it spots you doing it.
After that, wait for it to leave and then run to the painting and stab it.

This will require a few tries to get the timing down. For me the biggest issue was to realize that you had to stab the painting and not the Shambler.

Thanks for all input! <3 That was a poorly designed section IMO. Having to run round and round and round like an idiot, just hoping you are just around the corner to not get caught. Not exciting one bit, but rather tedious. Knowing what to do but not being able to do so because of game designs is... questionable.

Having ADD I didn't remember the knife design, even though I've looked at the clues. But I finally made it anyways, yay :)

Yeah - in the end I just ran around, sprinting particularly when I could hear the monster on my tail - trying every knife until I happened upon the one. Comically poor game design.

<Spoiler> now I'm in a hospital and it tells me to 'find a tool'. Note I get this message in a room where there's a rubber mallet and what appears to be a bag of tools on a nearby table, but no, not these tools. It's this kind of thing that kills player trust in the game designer.

Getting the knife wasn't the hardest part for me, I just backed away while keeping an eye on where the shambler was, I died a couple of times before figuring out that it was the painting you were supposed to stab though. I think the prompt was just "kill the shambler" or something like that, I had to look it up because it didn't occur to me at all.
The two other playthroughs I did I got it in the first try.

I agree getting the knife wasn't the hardest part. The hardest part was the Shambler is faster than you, and it knows your location and move towards you even if you stand still at the starting point and it hasn't even seen you yet. The AI is designed to move towards you despite you keeping hidden. And the hiding in closets mechanics is useless because you can't stay there as long as the Shambler takes to move away (unless perhaps you by this point have allready maxed out Hiding ability?).

My "strategy" was to very slowly move to the room with the knife, I had seen it's picture before and, knowing Lovecraft lore, recognizing the "Elder Sign". Had to turn around a couple times and it took quite a while, but I never had a problem hiding in closets unless he saw me go in. The fear effect starts getting wild, but it didn't force me out or anything. It also seems that he doesn't necessarily need to see you, but knows where you are when you look at him directly.

I also used the method of allowing him to see me and running around the other side of obstacles, keeping in mind where those hiding spots are and darting in while he rounds the corner. Once you get the knife, just make sure he isn't between you and the painting and make break for it.

Shambler encounters were probably my least favorite part of the game, but I do think it's necessary for the story, at some point you have to come across a monster you have no defense against.

I know, and what is worst for me is that there are hints leading up to it that it should be burned.

So the first attempt, I trie to sneak to the painting and try the obvious solution of setting it on fire with lighter, but nope, that obvious solution is not the in game one,

So then I tried to look for a loose lamp or something else flamable to interact with but nope.

The mention of burning was a red herring, the true hint is all the cases of weapons and a knife.

I sort of feel like this is a classic case where there are multiple logical solutions, but only one specifically programmed in game.
