Wait for a few seconds and then run past the main entrance doors to the other corner room, again hiding in the closet if necessary.
Wait a little while, then go to the corner showcase, smash it, and grab the dagger. The shambler will likely hear this, but the closet is nearby and you should be able to make it in before it spots you doing it.
After that, wait for it to leave and then run to the painting and stab it.
This will require a few tries to get the timing down. For me the biggest issue was to realize that you had to stab the painting and not the Shambler.
ps. the creature isn't smart.
EDIT: all i can say is, "know your knife" AND RUN
Having ADD I didn't remember the knife design, even though I've looked at the clues. But I finally made it anyways, yay :)
<Spoiler> now I'm in a hospital and it tells me to 'find a tool'. Note I get this message in a room where there's a rubber mallet and what appears to be a bag of tools on a nearby table, but no, not these tools. It's this kind of thing that kills player trust in the game designer.
The two other playthroughs I did I got it in the first try.
I also used the method of allowing him to see me and running around the other side of obstacles, keeping in mind where those hiding spots are and darting in while he rounds the corner. Once you get the knife, just make sure he isn't between you and the painting and make break for it.
Shambler encounters were probably my least favorite part of the game, but I do think it's necessary for the story, at some point you have to come across a monster you have no defense against.
I know, and what is worst for me is that there are hints leading up to it that it should be burned.
So the first attempt, I trie to sneak to the painting and try the obvious solution of setting it on fire with lighter, but nope, that obvious solution is not the in game one,
So then I tried to look for a loose lamp or something else flamable to interact with but nope.
The mention of burning was a red herring, the true hint is all the cases of weapons and a knife.
I sort of feel like this is a classic case where there are multiple logical solutions, but only one specifically programmed in game.
