Alliance versus Federation?

I started out playing Independent. I can't find any information on the two factions either on the web-site or searching on Google.

What is the difference between the two? Why would you pick one over the other? Story-wise in particular.

Or are they the exact same in every way, even story-wise?

You won't find any info on those, because there's not much or not at all difference between them apart from the territories in the charted space the factions own. I.e. if you start as FDN you will find yourself in "norhtern" part of the map, and if you are ALC - you will be in southern systems. There is no story in Evochron as such, just few introductory quest missions which are exactrly the same for ALC and FDN. The only perk of choosing ALC is that you can travel to SOL and not being attacked by locals

Actually you do have a main quest on each side with slightly diferent objectives. As a reminder the main quest are sometimes influenced by the action you choose to do while you doing it.

Actually, there is huge reddit post about whole Evochron lore, describing situation between those two faction - that is if you are intrested in RP or something like that. I didn't even read it myself yet. If you want to take a look:

That reddit post based on 'a book of tips and hints' that you can download from the official game site. The book describes the history of Evochron sector from the earliest games (Star Wraith 1-4) to Evochron Renegades. So it is wrong that the game universe has no lore. Unfortunately, the story ends where Evochron Legends begins.

If you refer to the "Book" written buy DaveK, I doubt it's available on the main game site.
