I was intrigued, until i read the reviews...
I'm not here to bash the game.

I'm here because i was intrigued by the game and read the reviews. Then i realized that the first page of user reviews were filled with praise (and a lot of Elite Dangerous bashing) from users who spend almost no time playing the game (while spending 10 times or more on ED).

I'm sure that happens to other games too. And I personally don't want to compare ED to this game or complain about it (i just started the demo and the tutorial alone takes more time than many of said reviewers have spend playing the game).

It's just that reading these reviews, i can't trust steam reviews anymore and will refrain from buying this game for the time being.

At least this game has a great demo, so i can check for myself. Not many games have that these days.

Yes, checking out the demo is certainly a good idea.

About the playtime of reviewers though, this game does not need steam to run. I usually play it without steam and I am sure a lot of other people do the same. Besides, the "playtime on record" stat on steam is not even reliable for games that definitely need to be played through steam. Playing offline does not count at all, and (at least for me) it does not count either if at any time while playing I lose internet connection. Add to that random steam glitches and bugs.

I am sure there are many people who just want to bash Elite or any other space game, and this game is a prime candidate to do it with (the barely known indie game), but that does not have to apply to everyone with a short playtime.

I spend most of my Evochron time playing offline when my internet connection really sucks (most of the time, which means my play time is not accurately recorded by Steam) and I also play Elite when I'm able to do so.
Evochron Legacy is a good game in it's own right. It's made 90%-ish by a single person with a very limited budget, you really CAN NOT compare it to Elite with it's development team and fairly large budget.

Elite has a lot of nice eye-candy and nice play, but it requires an internet connection to play.
Evochron has nice play and the graphics are improving with each game, it's available offline play is great.
Even though thses games are both "space sims", these games shouldn't be compared to each other, just enjoy each for what they offer.

I picked Evo up about 2 years ago or so to help me rationalize the purchase of the HOTAS that I had picked up a few months earlier to play ED. It never hooked me like ED did. ED makes me FEEL like I am flying around in a spaceship because it immerses me more (graphics, sound, ships) then Evo does, although Evo is probably a bit better on the simulation front. I just start back to playing this today though, so I'll give her another shot.

I never play any game using Steam unless I'm forced to.

So my time played displayed for both Evochron and Elite tells you nothing really. ;-)

I do play both games and have several thousands of hours for Evochron Mercenary & Legacy
and about 300hrs of Elite time.

Basically, Elite has been, since the first game in the 80s, THE go-to name when talking about space flight and trading games with planetary interactions. Frontier: Elite II is still technically the largest seamless free-roam environment ever made (equal with Frontier: First Encounters, obviously).

I'm not going to bother explaining all the many reasons players (with varying levels of justification) have for disliking Elite: Dangerous. Suffice to say there's been a lot of rough patches in development, and the "ten year plan" looks set to keep those rough patches coming. It just makes sense that people who get caught in those will end up angry.

Elite or not, this is a great game. There are a LOT of similarities between this game and Elite, both in terms of Elite's current feature list AND the promises it's making for future (additional payment required) updates. The comparisons are unavoidable, and while Elite has such a large space in the market, it WILL be getting brought up as a comparison point. While there's a lot of jaded, upset and burned-out ex-Elite players, there will be a lot of unfavourable comparisons. Some will be just venting to get over it. Some will be trying to justify playing a game with slightly less shiny graphics. And some will just want to spread the word about their dislike of Elite as far as possible and by any means possible (to be fair, not the best incentive to write a review, but that's what the "report" button is for).

I've personally held off on reviewing this game in small part because there's a bunch of things I haven't been able to try out yet, and in large part because I don't WANT to be "that guy", and it took a while to get over my own frustrations with Frontier regarding broken promises and a (fortunately honoured) false advertising claim to get a refund.

I don't have Elite, it's on my wishlist though, and it's because of this game. I did review Evochron though, there is no bashing or anything in it, just my thoughts on the game after about 60 hours from never having played a pilot sim like this before. Feel free to check it out.
