What should I be buying from the shop?
I haven't played that much, just under 2 hours, and I'm still not out of the first area quite yet. I've been going through, killing every enemy, and dying a few times (is this what you're supposed to do?). My 2 guys seems pretty strong I guess, but I am concerned about shopping.

Currently, I have over 10 000 bucks, and haven't bought anything from any of the shops. Enemies don't respawn, so clearly I only have a limited amount of money here, and I figure more powerful stuff will be available later on. Exactly what sort of things should I be buying/avoiding here? I haven't even bought any healing items cuz it seems like each time I die, my garden back at home has more vegetables, so I've got a few of those. Should I be buying any of the armor? Does it not matter?

I don't wanna render the game unbeatable because I spend all my money on low tier stuff, when for all I know, the next area of the game could have armor or weapons twice as good as the stuff I may be about to buy now.

Hylics is a lot easier than you seem to be worried about. It's “a recreational game with light JRPG elements,” remember? The fact that you're almost at 2 hours and you haven't left the first area should be concerning to you given that the store page says that there's about 2 hours worth of content.

I cannot imagine how you can make the game unbeatable, if only because every battle you win lets you increase your max health if you die. There is no XP or leveling - all stats are raised through equipment. There are way more enemies than you actually need to fight. Just go with the flow, buy whatever makes your numbers go up, use every TV you see, and approach the fights tactically. Relax. It'll all make sense. Well, the gameplay will. Nothing else.

Yeah, Hylics is a good 'go with the flow' type game. I find myself avoiding almost every fight, maybe starting one every once in a while if I'm near an area I can heal for free or I know I'm heading towards one. Eventually money and items seem easy enough to come by without grinding and killing every enemy. There are some very tough required battles that may require a fair bit of strategy (status effects are very important, avoiding them, and inflicting them). So far, I've only found 1 battle that I thought was unfair, but I got a little lucky and beat it on my 5th try once I figured out what worked. Very fun game, I don't feel compelled to fight every battle and enemy and focus more on exploring the bizarre world, but the light JRPG and adventure elements are fleshed out enough to be fun and interesting which keeps this from being a boring walking simulator.

By spending all your money on hotdogs instead of fun trip access, albeit this takes herculean effort.

"Wayne, just about how many hot dogs do you eat a day?"
