No voices and now crash
I can't hear NPC voices so I played around with sound settings and had to reload the game for changes to take effect. Now I get "PRECACHING" and then this:

Might be an issue with the configuration settings becoming corrupt, go to "Browse Local Files" and then in the System folder delete Revision.ini and RevisionUser.ini and try again.

Right. I'm going to keep posting in this one now. It got moved, nobody told me it got moved, I couldn't find it so I thought a moderator deleted it.

I get this when reloading the game after changing settings:

After deleting the ini files, reloading and finishing the training level I get this:

Hopefully you can view those screenshot on my Dropbox without needing to download them. Photobucket sucks balls so I'm not using it anymore.

And the NPC holograms in the last room of the training level have no heads.

Sorry, forgot to redirect this one. Are you using the Direct3D9 renderer?

Can you post Revision.log as per the instructions in the Crash Reporting topic?

It crashes the same every time I load the game unless I Alt-Tab, as soon as "PRECACHING" appears in the middle of the screen, to the desktop and then Alt-Tab back to the game and then it works and I can load a save game and I hear voices now.

That log above was from starting the game, waiting on the precaching screen and then the crash to desktop with the error message.

I don't have a log yet of the crash after the training level because I'll have to replay it again and now I don't have time tonight.

I'm guessing it's this bit where the crash happens looking at two different logs - one where it crashes and one where it doesn't.

No crash:

DevMusic: Load music: Music Title_Music.Title_Music Log: Enter SetRes() Log: UnSetRes() -> m_d3d9 != NULL Log: D3D adapter driver : nvd3dum.dll Log: D3D adapter description : NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Log: D3D adapter id : 0x10DE:0x1004 Init: Depth bits: 24

Crash:

DevMusic: Load music: Music Title_Music.Title_Music Critical: appError called: Critical: RevConsole Transient.RevConsole0 (Function Revision.RevConsole.KeyEvent:0001) Runaway loop detected (over 10000000 iterations) Critical: Windows GetLastError: The operation completed successfully. (0) Exit: Executing UObject::StaticShutdownAfterError Exit: Executing UWindowsClient::ShutdownAfterError Exit: UGalaxyAudioSubsystem::ShutdownAfterError

So, to do with the D3D9 renderer then? My graphics card?

Ok, this seems like an odd crash. However you should not see Precaching, there should be loading screens?

Does it work without Shifter?
Do you have a dual (or more) monitor setup?

Sorry, only just got back on my PC after yesterday. Also Steam isn't alerting me to new posts for some reason.

I have a dual monitor set-up but currently my second screen is disabled so I only have the one 2560x1440 monitor and SLI turned on in Nvidia control panel. I only use the second screen when working on my own mod projects or making games.

I've not tried without Shifter so I'll try that now.

Okay. Tried it without Shifter, same thing.

EDIT

This is what I see when I start Revision:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/xqfcqky3waw926c/Precaching.png?dl=0

It stays like that while the intro music plays for about 2 or 3 minutes until the desktop appears with this error:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/7abbqkbl6daogi6/Revision%20mod%20crash.PNG?dl=0

If I Alt-Tab to the desktop while "precaching" is there and Alt-Tab back again the main menu appears and I can start the game.

Like I said.

I should also point out I turned on Hardware 3D Support and Dolby Suround Sound - because I have that. I have a Creative X-Fi sound card with Dolby Digital Surround on. This being Windows 7 I have to use ALchemy for some old games, Deus Ex doesn't appear to be one of those old games that requires it. It's not on the original ALchemy list of games anyway.

ALchemy is needed in Windows 7 for old games that use the DirectSound3D API, otherwise you don't get EAX effects and proper surround stereo. It's needed for Thief (the original one).

That sounds like a start. If Alchemy supplies DirectSound3D, Galaxy (the default UnrealEngine 1 AudioSubsystem) will use it in favor of WinMM as the backend and DXOgg uses some nasty stuff to initialize itsself, so that might create a conflict.

Can you try to start Revision with -nodsound option?
If that does not work, can you try to disable ALchemy for Revision/DeusEx?

/UPDATE:
Use -no3dsound and -nodsound option.

I assume you mean put -no3dsound -nodsound in the launch options of Revision and not Deus Ex GOTY? Well I did that and it still does the same precaching thing.

Also, I'm not actually using ALchemy for this because I couldn't find the registry settings for Deus Ex. The old game list on Creative's website was taken down a few years ago but I copied the lists before they did that and Deus Ex isn't on the list for some reason.

EDIT

It doesn't seem to make a difference if I turn off Dolby surround and Hardware 3D support and reload. Maybe this isn't a sound issue after all? The only way to stop it is clear those ini files each time but I can't do that every time I run the game.

I guess I'll just have to use the Alt-Tab method, it works. I just hope the game doesn't randomly crash while playing it.

Last crash log from about a third of the way down:
