Ambient sound volume?

E.g. the crickets on Liberty Island -- it's hard to hear the dialogue over the background noise, even with sound volume turned down to 4-5 and voice set to max. They also seem to be a lot louder than other sound effects, like hitting things with the baton. Is there any way to turn down the ambience volume or, failing that, disable ambient sounds entirely?
