you make good points in the begining but i disagree with your army composition.
i ALWAYS use more than 60% archers. i play this game since late 90s and i porbably have many thousands of hours of playtime. and i always play on impossible difficulty (and even this diff is not really challenging if lords are not spawned close or are not aggressive early on).
60% archers does NOT mean you don't have enough mele. early on you go only pikes and bows which are cheap and you should always field more men than the enemy. pikes do ♥♥♥♥ damage but are very tough, they won't die vs peasants or other units you'll find in early AI armies. bows are amazing since they all attack ALL THE TIME during a battle and because of their range, they will always weaken down enemies before engagements. more archers an army has=better army. if you have less archers and more pikes, you will have a big blob of units stumbling around in the front of your army waiting for other units to die so they can enter battle.
archers deal rather low damage but have a super fast fire rate and are highly effective against lightly armored units (anything but pikes, swordsmen and knights). once enemy army starts having more armoured units, just add 200 crossbowmen to your army and place them right behind first line and you are set.
you can replace pikes with swordsmen later on if you want, but it's not really necessary since your dps comes from bows and crossbows, not front line units.
about knights/peasants, my personal opinion is this: if you ever use knights or peasants in your army composition, you are bad at this game.
if you find yourself laking weapons, maybe you should improve the early game economy strategy.
if you find yourself using knights, you are wasting resources and crowns. they are NOT as good as they seem and are HIGHLY overpriced.
Only use if you have enough resources though, very expensive.
Never use peasants, they're useless unless you make a basic peasant army of 50 to just destroy enemy fields harrassing their economy and diminishing their populace.
i completely agree. but i always found that tactic cheap. besides, they can also encircle your knights while you fight archers and you lose those expensive units. keep in mind that knights have the best speed and damage in the game but their armor is average, under pikes (best) and swords(second best).
another cheap tactic for open battles are mass maces. if you attack before the enemy goes into position, you can decimate anything. however, you will always end up losing some units, regarless how much you outnumber the enemy. i always prefer strats that are very cost effective and archer+pike (+crossbow later on) is simply the best.
Again, hearing the game's background music just soothes my mind.
Is it just me and my nostalgic view or is it indeed one of the great compositions?
Oh, and I bought 250 macemen mercenaries to go f**k with the Countess' lands, see how she feels about that.
Could you please explain? I've sunk a few hundred hours in to this and haven't heard of a wheat exploit. I know wheat is king but is there some sort of cool trick?
Yes but this applies to saved games, DohItAgain was referring to multiplayer sessions.
