Won't run, Win 10
After I click "Play" from the launcher, I get a black screen for 3 seconds and then nothing, back to the desktop. I am running Win 10, with latest drivers. Thoughts?

Been getting this same issue on Win XP Pro and Win 7 Pcs. I have the CD for this game and it does the same thing. I can install it on an Nvidia PC, that has an Nvidia 512mb graphics card and it works!. My other two PCs have ATI Radeon cards and the issue persists on those two.

Best I can think of is (1) run w95 compatiblility mode - you have to find the launcher exe file by drilling down through the directories and right click on it and set it, In my case it was several layers of directories before I found it but, luckily I didn't have to use it. (2) completely remove the game and reinstall (you have probably done this of course). I have seldom had problems even with older games (I am using win10 and I do have an Nvidia card). The worst I remember was Disciples II. I did get it to run after a long time but once I did I didn't care anymore and I filed it in my category "Junk". I guess the fun was just making it work. I have a few games that I have so designated, lol. Good luck! I am going to try LOTR2 because I do like turn-based or pseudo turn-based (i.e. you can pause at will) strategy games. I did a google and found the manual so I should be able to actually play.

I bought a Acer monitor a year ago. The new monitors seem to have the ability to size the screen & convert to earlier windows automatically. I no longer have to mess with files when jumping back & forth with new & old games. Just an observation that I hope I'm telling you right. Or it could be that a tech change something in the OP so it does it auto.

The monitor doesn't make a difference. I am certain it is the graphics cards. I also went ahead and purchased the Steam version of LOTR2 and it also, does the black screen and crash to desktop deal. game works fine on my Nvidia card, but no go on my two ATI Radeon cards.

Oh, okay. I up graded my video card about the same time. I thought the monitor did the sizing. Thanks for setting me straight.
It runs on Linux :signix:

Just find Lords2.exe and turn on "win 98/me" compatibility and 640x480 resolution

This is the best hint! You have try a combination of settings depinding on your gpu/graphic chipset. For my atom based tablet I set xp sp3, 8 bit color and override dpi. Don't mess with the launcher, just grab a shortcut of lords2.exe (in my case "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Lords of the Realm II\English\Lords of the Realm II\Lords2.exe") and click away...

This!!! Thank you! I finally got it to work!

Great tips. I got it to work by navigating to the local files and following these steps. However I had to change the settings for all users because it runs as an administrator account.

I've been futzing with this for a while and I've found an issue that causes the black screen and cursor for a few seconds and then quitting. This is after doing all of the other things like installing DirectPlay, compatibility settings, etc. You have to ensure that any subdirectory in the full path for the application is 8 characters or less (DOS style).
