Basically, works the same way as single player's skirmish/survival, except people can hop in or out at any time and you can play with other people.

It's like playing one of those survival mmo games (like Rust, Ark, etc) except it's not filled with other players trying to murder you for breathing their air. You can play it solo, with a bunch of friendly AIs or go online with your friends on a server. Game sessions are aimed at a few minutes to a few hours but your stats carry over between sessions.
