I also agree about having co-op partner more tied to you. If HP pool is combined, you should start with 30 health or something. Also, you should get to share land so if your partner has 1 water land and you have 1 water, then you should have 2 water and also place your water cards on theirs. Maybe not both land share and higher HP, but one or the other.
Also, the land counts should be independent for the specific land types and should be maintained individually. However, the partnered characters should be able to treat each others land as friendly for the purpose of attaching new lands.
It wouldn't be that hard to clean this up.
If only some insanely addictive collectible card game came out in the early 90's that could have laid ground work for the genre.
