Yep, the campaign has you competing against opponents with catchup assistance. At least you can turn it off outside of that.

I'm stuck here on the tier 4 duel because of this ♥♥♥♥.

It's called catchup and you have it too, it's not only for bots

I have to say that most Racing games without Catchup are:

Edit: Since T7 / T8 the KI seems to loose the Rubber banding. even if they are 1500m in front of me and i drive good they make nearly zero mistakes and dont drive slower.
1: Simulator -> i dont like these.
2: Boring easy.

and i have to say it feels nice intigrated in Grip. If I drive bad and are around 2-3kilometers behind it seems that he crashes more often.

Until around 1 Kilometer he is back to his good driving KI. So i have to drive good -> realy good to catchup.

If im ahead of him I can outdrive the Oppenent by driving perfect with boostluck + 90% of the speedpats. On T7 I managed to get 2 free big crashes without losing the first place.

For me this seems to be a fair and not too heavy Rubber banding. Just enough to give you the feel of an intense race.

Duels are a little tougher beacuase you only have 1 opponent. He can blast you like you can blast him very often. spare some good items for the last 30 seconnds.

Speed duels .... :D yea now you just have to learn the track.

I love the game. <3 <3 <3 and im sorry for my broken English.

Have fun

Its really annoying and makes me not want to play the campaign, hope the devs either give the option to turn it off or tone it down massively!

I also hate it. The campaign just never gets a good sense of challenge as a result.
It's either condescendingly easy or it has the AI just asspulling stupid speeds to cheat and win.

Seems like the devs have attempted to fill in for their lacking AI by just relying on rubberbanding.

Its funny, reaaally funny. Playing on my PS4 i found that even with disabled catch up in single event, if u go too fast and too far, 2-3 AI combatants MAGICALLY screw you at MAGIC speed (smth bout 3 Mach i think) even if u driving nearly perfectly on fast cars (Dreadnought or Tempest) on straight lines. Another strange notice is that its happening on all difficulities. Easy or Hard, no matter. Looks like devs really think that relying on rubberbanding, wich abused by AI is the way to keep game challenging. U absolutely right in your thoughts. Playing Ultimate Race and awaiting AI patch.

Without catch up on, the AI are not definitely not "cheating" to catch you, so not sure why it would seem so incredibly difficult without it - unless they were ahead of you already due to player error. Robert (Grip's programmer) has spent considerable time working on AI and they're quite smart in races, utilizing pickups and performing maneuvers at very high speeds. They're like very skilled players. With catch-up they get a little help if behind. It's nothing different than playing online. If anything online should be harder against humans who also have catch-up

At any rate, the catch-up system has received some tweaks for next update!
