Where to install patches?

I am trying to fix the framerate issue and downloaded the SECUROM offline patch (ArcaniA_Gothic4_Offline_Installer_EFIGS.zip) and the latest patch (i think) from patch scrolls (arcania-securom.zip/SGSD70C.exe) and the framerate still sucks.
My laptop, though old, can easily handle skyrim on high quality and arcania lags on low.

One thing that I couldnt figure out was the install Location. In the patches, when asked for it, I would select ..../common/Arcania Gothic 4 and it would register it as ..../common/Arcania Gothic 4/ArcaniA - Gothic 4 (it would create a sub-folder inside the folder and the new exe wouldnt work because it needed the game's dll files). I had to rename the install location back to ..../common/Arcania Gothic 4 before installing

Also, someone suggested to execute it from the Arcania_original_bak.exe file which is created from the patches, but no such file exists.

What should I do?
