The problem is that we have 4 players, yet 1 particular player and me cannot join the same lobby because the game either crashes for us, or we get a notification saying "Connection Error"
From what I understand, setting Metric in connection settings only forces game to prioritise (and therefore has lesser problems of recognising) the network adapter. So it may work where if you're using Hamachi but unable to find lobby, etc. This sort of problem happens to most other softwares, such as ZeroTier as well (though ZT probably handles it better, from what I remember, AoE3 had problems in detecting ZT interface until metric was changed)
For game crashes, are you meaning that it desyncs? Or literal crashes? If it is either, then was the game modded or the config changed by ANY of the player? Any chances that are not equal among players will cause a desync/crash.
Connection Error problem may most likely relate to host/client problem where the internet is not that good.
There are 4 players: two of them have no problems, and there's also me, and a guy we will call Mareczek. Mareczek cannot see the server i create and otherwise - i can't see the servers created by him. When we try to join a session that is hosted by any of the two guys that have no problem with TG2, only one of us can join - when the other tries to join a 3/4 server, he either gets The Guild 2 crashed, or he gets a Connection Error message.
I have checked his firewall settings, his ZeroTier configuration and every other thing that caused us problems with playing The Guild 2 in the beginning. I should also note that everything between me and Mareczek worked perfectly fine 2 weeks ago, but right now we just cannot play together.
You mentioned that it worked for both of you two weeks prior- that would mean before you start using ZeroTier. Assuming you made new network and had everyone joined, Windows 10 should have prompted what type of network the ZeroTier interface is, that's my basis of asking above question.
It worked after we switched to ZeroTier – Hamachi enabled us to connect with each other and start games, but right after the start we were getting out of sync errors. Switching to ZeroTier allowed us to play the game at all, but i don't recall Windows prompting the question about the type of network. What we did is that we disabled firewall for all three Profiles (e.g., public, domain, and private) for ZeroTier in firewall's advanced settings.
When you connect to a network, any network, Windows will ask if the network is public or private.
Yes, ZeroTier has a public or private mode too [1] (basically either open, or authorised user only), but Windows' public and private mode will determine if your computer can be found via network discovery for that interface (network) [2].
As seen in [2], my zerotier interface (in this case Network 19, yes, I have a lot of networks installed, hush) is a "private" network designated by Windows. It has to be private so Windows allows device discovery on that specific network. In this context, Windows' definition of "Private" mean trusted, and "Public" mean untrusted (such as public wifi).
If it is public, it cannot be found.
As mentioned, this is more of a shot in the dark, vague Connection Error message from the game itself isn't doing anyone any good 😅
Edit: So I've mistaken, Windows doesn't ask if your network is private or public- it ask if you want your device to be discoverable [3]. If you answer "yes", then it will set your network as "Private" in Windows' context.
