The Guild II

Did this game install Xvid?
Okay so I just installed and played this game for the first time, but when I finished my session I noticed that XVid and a number of other programmes, including Nic's Minicalc and StatReader 2.1, had been installed on my system.

Was this included with The Guild 2? If so, can I remove them and still play the game?

Okay, thanks guys. I uninstalled everything and the game works fine.

It's weird that they would even add that stuff to the install... it's just utterly unnecessary bloatware.

Bumping this because just found these installed this morning after installing Guild II, and this would have been an instant do not install for me. I do not trust random installations of programs like "mini-calc", and this is pretty unusual for the well groomed market place of Steam.

Bumping too, it seems this is still a problem. This seems kinda shady??

Are Xvid & minicalc actually dangerous. seems very sneaky and underhand to me, but the game looks fun and i don't want to bin it if I don't have to. Thanks folks.

The short answer is that they're not dangerous, just untidy.

And the long answer is that I did a bit of digging and all these items are there to support video playback. The thing is, the only video in this game is the intro sequence when you first boot it up - which you would usually skip through anyway. It's kind of a sloppy solution to a trivial aspect of the game.

Removing these software items means that you can hear the audio of the intro but you don't see it. One click of the mouse and you're into the main menu.

So yeah, it won't hurt your PC to keep them and it won't hurt your game to remove them. The choice is yours...
