You were given a hint as to what the Angel's Tears do by El Topo. He said that "they can melt more than just hearts."
And by the final cutscene, you see what just one of them can do. It instantly melts the ice keeping the mysterious creature imprisoned in Drake's Laboratory in hibernation, but somehow it doesn't hurt William or the creature (whose fate is unmentioned in the ending), or destroy the lab.
I have no idea just how melting huge amounts of ice in an instant is supposed to help against the Bionts or "Old Ones" from the first Aquanox game, though.
But in the end, the game tries to juggle the material and mundane plot of the first part, with some mysticism and spirituality in the sequel. And it turns out a very strange cocktail.
By God, it would be better if they told that the main antagonist of the first part survived and again plans his insidious technocratic aspirations.
In the beginning it mentions that the indestructible lifeform was on a silicon basis, which is the same as the old ones, at the end of aquanox 1. The wording regarding the angel tears, that is interesting, is that the ending of "archimedean dynasty" (aquanox 0), hung lung destroying the biont fortress was described as "melting the steel heart". The events of aquanox 0, resulted in the surface becoming habitable again. The events of aquanox 1 resulted in the bionts assimilating one of the old ones (the indestructible creature from the beach), both parties seem to hate the living hell out of each other. And it being revealed that the bionts had settled the surface (brainfire). It also ends with the proficy of humanity regaining the surface. Aquanox 2, ends with the main protagonist and his new found buddies becoming rich and powerfull, and the hint of him and the hero of the first 2 parts meeting. As the author of the original story Helmut Halfmann, died in 2009, we'll never know how it was supposed to play out. Here's my theory: Grandma Drake was the mother of Emerald Flint, in the next (maybe 2) installments, the bionts and the old ones would have been played against each other, resulting in their desruction and the main protagonists would have played a major role in this and the return to the surface. Maybe with some kind of mythical stuff that had to be found hidden in the ruins mentioned in an1.
id love to see a fitting end to this quite an epic storyline, as it stands we can only fantasize our own versions, kinda like an open ended book. I didnt know the man who created aquanox story has died, rip...
But yeah, wish there was some kind of Book or anything from Helmut Halfmann, and the Aquanox games were just a game version of this haha
Ah well, always enjoying the atmosphere and the world building though, as well as the characters. Especially AN0 / Archimedean Dynasty was gorgeous.
Rest in peace Helmut Halfmann.
This was super helpful since I kinda lost the plot on AquaNox 2 despite really enjoying the game. I need to go back and play the older ones then, A2 was just the one I remembered playing with my brother as a kid. XD
