How do you log in?

I start the game, it gives me a user/password prompt, but obviously I have no account yet.

So I type in a user/password anyway, then the screen splits and the login prompt is off the bottom of the screen, but now I have some text along the top some of which says, "new account" and it's clickable.

So I click 'new account' and it opens up a web browser to my default home page.

What exactly am I suppose to do to play this game from steam?

Thanks. It's weird this isn't baked into the client. There must be a TON of people who have tried to play but gave up when first booting up the game.

I agree. One of many areas where AO shows it's extreme age.

go to anarchy online website. login to my account at
https://register.funcom.com/account
login successful. so might as well click on download manager from the account page. run the download manager and installer and patches. game starts and prompts for login. wont log me in. login also doesnt work at
https://account.anarchy-online.com/
apparently there are two (might be more) anarchy online logins and they are NOT the same. so I uninstalled both copies of the game. not worth the effort to figure out this login scheme.

That's a shame because it's actually quite simple.

Head to https://www.anarchy-online.com/ and click play for free and creation an account.

That's a shame because it's actually quite simple.

Then download on steam and install and then click play and input your login details that you made earlier.

I had same problem as cheshirm.

I actually have 2 AO accounts from long ago. I reset the PW's, was able to log into them on the web.

Went back to the game client, but neither account let me play since their subscriptions lapsed years ago. But now I am going to have to create another account that is 'free', meaning I lose out on all my old characters.

Just wasn't worth the hassle and I uninstalled it.

This is odd, either you guys can't read or expect your hand haled 100%..
Why would you assume a random username and password would work,
no game client will ever work that way, that's mind baffling.

There is even an account tab on the client, that takes you to a page where you login to old accounts or create free account, which is clearly wrote on the left side of the screen.

You're not missing a great deal to honest, but if you can't even handle the account screen, this game would bury you in the first day. it's old old school pre WoW work for what you want, there is no click win in this game.

Technically correct - it's tab/o/win, length of time until win determined by how many clients you are running.

I appreciate what you are saying, but when I start the game and am at log-in screen, there is no other button anywhere. Just a username/password box and nothing else.

It's not that I was expecting an old account to work (I had to reset those passwords), it's the fact that there is literally no indication of how to create a new account (or that you absolutely need a brand new account to play for free) anywhere in the game client.

Lastly, I DID play this game, I literally started playing the very first day the game released, the first moment the servers opened so many years ago. I remember getting stuck in the starting area on day 1 because there were so many people the servers were lagging out and nobody could warp to the next area. I remember learning to 'turn left' inside each mission so that you were sure to explore all the rooms. I remember trying different skills to find what was viable (I mostly played a doctor). I remember when they first added the 'matrix' like area so you could move between places much faster. It's a great game (or was a great game).

You'd think that after all these years and then finally adding it to steam they could add at least a small quality of life improvement such as a link to account creation from the client log-in screen, or at least ANY verbiage on the screen with a hint that you need to use the web browser to create an account.

The experience as-is today is very off-putting to anyone other than a die-hard veteran of the game or maybe someone who's already been told what to expect when opening the client for the first time in the year 2019.

wheeel, I tried to log in and couldn't...couldn't remember my old password so I did the..duh duh duh...PASSWORD RESET SET SET SET. finally after clicking on several links I got a password emailed to me. Nope...doesn't work on the account page...doesn't work on the game log in. I actually created a whole new account with a different email and guess what???! that didn't work either. So, to say that someone is pining to have their hand held is a bit of a stretch especially considering that the password reset process is pretty confusing. One would think making a new account would be easy too...yah, best idea to just uninstall and move on.

well maybe someone can help me, if your talking about hardcore old school anarchy online players than you got one right here talking. i played froob for a LONG time and than i decided to pay to play it was worth every penny. i loved the game immensely, anyway as i said i need a little help im trying to get back into my old account i renewed my subscription for the first month to see if i could at least get this to work. i loved the game so much years ago 15 dollars is a small price to pay to see if i can get back into my old game. and yes if your still wondering how dedicated to the game i was if i can get into my old game i got a awesome lvl 212 trader waiting for me. anyone that knows the game knows you gotta be dedicated to grind a lvl212 trader.
i have tried many things to get the client to run ive finally gotten to the client screen where you enter your account and password and enter the game but every time i put in my account info and my password i just sit there staring at the statues of all the classes.
does anyone have any idea about the problem im having?
i can give more information if needed about the process ive went through to get the client to at least even open up.
all i can say is if there is anyone out there that knows what im going through and how to fix it PLEASE HELP!!!!! lol

my SOLUTION was to run it in windowed/borderless mode...it was simply hiding the character selection offscreen.

still having janky login/auth server issues to this day, jun 2023 :( i can only assume the auth server, account management server/service, and the actual game login point are ALL, on different servers, in the forgotten closets of three (or more) different companies. 8 accounts, i can log in with 4 of the 5 from 2020, but having not yet remembered the password for 3/3 made previous to that, i tried having one password reset...now that account cant login to the account webpage, the game, or anything, and the pw they sent me doesnt work anywhere either. guess i'll just wait and try to remember the pw's i had from before, so i dont cause the accounts i CAN login with, to be forgotten in this fail loop. so sad. such greatness wasted by megacorp greed, then relegated to the ages, even while people are hammering on the door throwing money at them. amazing.
