No, the Steam download is just the old client. There's an updated client called the New Engine, but you can only download it from anarchy-online.com. To download it there, just click the [+] button next to 'DOWNLOAD' and then click the 'TRY NEW ENGINE' menu option.
I'm using NE and recommend it, but note that it doesn't change the polygons in the game - just updates the textures and shadows. Still much better looking and worth it IMO. It's prone to infrequent crashes in the more detailed areas - especially the Clan city or Tir. I've found that if I switch to 1st Person view in such detailed areas, that crashes are much rarer. I've never experienced a crash with the NE while in an instanced mission location and rarely in large dungeon areas like the Subway. The NE client requires a bit of optimization on your PC, for which there's good videos on how to at the Anarchy Online Discord channel.
I run a RTX2080, ultra wide msi screen and 16 ram, 6 core so on.
I can play in 4k ultra wide mode, but it has to be windowed, and if i dual log it's an insta crash, unless I split screen or dual desktop.
I had to mess with the client setup for it to work right.
my NONE RTX system has no issues at all, I think the vid card is like.. ewww how old ?
lol
